Hey all, new to the site and so glad I found this thread!!
Basically, same issue for me, my 'friend' got very drunk at my house, after I woke up on the sofa, I found him asleep on the spare matress I'd set up on my bedroom floor, so I got into my bed, which was made, to find I was suddenly soaking.. What I haven't told you is he has a tendency to relieve himself in inappropriate places when drunk... So I knew immediately he'd urinated on my bed, and furthermore, I had just climbed into it. After having a furious shower at 5am I went back and felt under the sheet and matress protector, and my worst fears realised, it'd soaked all the way through to the mattress. There's no stain, presumably as he was so drunk, it was mostly water but I woke up the next day (Having slept in a different room after trying to wake him then sending him a text alerting him to his actions) to find him with a bottle of Febreeze AIR FRESHENER and a hair dryer.. He used half of the bottle, of the air freshener which is now stupidly overpowering the whole room, but if the window's left closed, it starts to smell really funky, so the urine has definately taken hold!

It's a £230 mattress which he's loosely offered to pay for replacing, but he's wanting to try getting it cleaned first.. Firstly, is it actually worth doing? I mean this is a NICE mattress which I bought 2 years ago and I looked after, will it be back to normal after even the most proffessional clean?? I'm worried he's going to phone some dodgy looking company who'll assure him their 'treatment' will clean the urine out and he'll believe them, wasting his money and leaving me for even longer without a bed and having to camp out in the lounge!

Also, should I even bother calling my home insurance provider?

If the urine has soaked right into the mattress, then it will be impossible to clean all traces from it.

I'd tell him it's making the house stink so it's going outside and ask when he'll be round with the money for the one you want.

I wouldn't enter discussions about insurance claims or a cleaning service.

    What is a furious shower?

Imagine you've just got into your beloved bed to find it's been soaked in urine, and you're covered in it.. The resulting shower is furious in 2 ways.. Firstly, the person responsible gets a load of new names, which aren't suitable for this forum, and secondly, being covered in someone elses urine will leave you washing furiously... Unless you're into that kind of thing, which I'm not..

I'm not sure whether or not it's gone right through, but I don't want to be without a bed for however long just waiting for the stench.. I just don't actually feel I can sleep on it! Even if it were cleanable, surely the springs would rust anyway?

Haha, I don't think my neighbours would appreciate that!! But I have told him I can't stay in my bedroom because of the smell and I want to get it sorted within a week. He's got NO money whatsoever so I said I can buy it on my credit card which is 0% APR until March and he can pay me back in instalments which he's accepted, but he wants to call the mattress doctor tomorrow, and I'm sure the salesman he speaks to will assure him their treatment will be effective..

I'm glad the general consensus on insurance is that it's a no go, I really don't want to go down that route.

It almost makes you feel that much insurance is utterly pointless if your afraid to claim on it because of increases in premium or future problems with the insurer.

Tim, you seem to know an awful lot about cleaning urine out of mattresses (3 posts at least), are you a regular bed wetter or do you prefer to save it for when staying with friends? ;)
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

I'm in the bed business, so I do know about what will damage mattresses.
  • what were the circumstances causing the friends to urinate on the mattress?

if it is health/illness related and the friend or yourself knew about it then the insurer will not cover as the event was forseeable.

like a pregnant lady deciding on a home birth and trying to claim for the mess - sorry but that is forseeable.

as are young childrens bedwetting episodes.

however if it was a complete accident and out of character - eg: unforseeable then it should be covered.

as someone stated a pregnant ladies waters breaking 3 months early - covered as unexpected. on the due date not covered as expected.
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!
