Bed wetting -mattress ruined -accidental damage?

It wouldn't be the stain that bothered me, but the fact that the inside of the mattress was soaked with wee and would begin to smell over time.
Would cleaning get rid of the inside problem as well?
If the urine has soaked right through the mattress, then it would be impossible to clean it properly.0 -
my friend's ex used to do this when drunk, highly unpleasant...0

Hmm ... difficult one & I think only your insurer would be able to say for definite if they would cover it ... It probaly depends on the circumstances - if they were totally drunk it may be seen as "foreseeable" - a pregnant lady who's waters broke unexpectedly 3 months early & left a stain may well be treated as unforeseen (but towards the end of the pregnancy it could be argued that she should be protecting the mattress ....)
You could try one of the portable hand steamers - but personally I think i would look into cleaning before contacting the insurers (if only to avoid the increase in premiums!!) Comapnies that clean upholstery/mattresses are very used to dogs/children etc weeing on furniture & will sanitise & clean it thoroughly ... you may well not get teh stain out though ...
I hope your friend is a) medically ok & b) a good enough friend that this will not ruin your friendship forever!0 -
My friend has offered to pay - but to replace is approx £500 and I have insurance - thats what its there for. Just wondered if anyone knew if i could claim before i bite the bullet and phone and ask

I've dealt with two claims for damage to carpets due to pregnant ladies water breaking, apparantly it causes a lot of damage.0

We have had the very occasional accident over a couple of decades (not a regular occurence).
We clean up as best we can and then live with it.
I'm sure that's what most people do.
A bit different if it's someone else's mess I must admit.
Is your friend able to afford it?
If so then just accept their offer.
They might actually rather you did that.0 -
Hey all, new to the site and so glad I found this thread!!
Basically, same issue for me, my 'friend' got very drunk at my house, after I woke up on the sofa, I found him asleep on the spare matress I'd set up on my bedroom floor, so I got into my bed, which was made, to find I was suddenly soaking.. What I haven't told you is he has a tendency to relieve himself in inappropriate places when drunk... So I knew immediately he'd urinated on my bed, and furthermore, I had just climbed into it. After having a furious shower at 5am I went back and felt under the sheet and matress protector, and my worst fears realised, it'd soaked all the way through to the mattress. There's no stain, presumably as he was so drunk, it was mostly water but I woke up the next day (Having slept in a different room after trying to wake him then sending him a text alerting him to his actions) to find him with a bottle of Febreeze AIR FRESHENER and a hair dryer.. He used half of the bottle, of the air freshener which is now stupidly overpowering the whole room, but if the window's left closed, it starts to smell really funky, so the urine has definately taken hold!
It's a £230 mattress which he's loosely offered to pay for replacing, but he's wanting to try getting it cleaned first.. Firstly, is it actually worth doing? I mean this is a NICE mattress which I bought 2 years ago and I looked after, will it be back to normal after even the most proffessional clean?? I'm worried he's going to phone some dodgy looking company who'll assure him their 'treatment' will clean the urine out and he'll believe them, wasting his money and leaving me for even longer without a bed and having to camp out in the lounge!
Also, should I even bother calling my home insurance provider?0 -
What is a furious shower?0
