Bake some potatoes, cut in half, scoop out the middle, slice the empty skin lengthwise into long wedges (or you could use good, thick potato peelings but cook them for a little longer) place in a ceramic baking dish, sprinkle over a good amount of grated cheese (no skimpingh!) and then sprinkle with the bacon bits for salads (I use Bacos), chuck 'em back in the oven for about 10 minutes until melted and bubbly and enjoy.

They're very more-ish! And can be prepared a little in advance (ie before the match) and then chucked in at half time!

Right....have thought at length what I do when beer is flowing and budget is up the creek:

    Suggestions as follows:

Sweetcorn/onion fritters (flour/milk/whichever veg and seasoning) serve with a value chutney/dip...minutes to make and costs less than 30p a pan full-recipe is half milk, twice that quantity of flour..then whatever you put in)

Chicken Dippers (less than 50p from my local...I know you don't know what's gone in but when they are drinking they aren't worried)

Pitta Pizza: (packet of cheap pitta bread, tom puree, onion, grated cheese-minimal anything else you have lurking in fridge- I can normally make 8 for approx 50p)

Hot corned beef fritters (batter as above normally using up residue)

Potato Wedges (don't think I need to elaborate, just chop, season, in oven)

Altho I am struggling with the "ball thing"

swedish meatballs are half price in sainsburys and can be eaten cold, I'm also sure that the fritters can be done in ball shapes if careful, if you chunk the corned beef and batter it will come out kinda "bally" like pakora

I agree that if you are dealing with men and beer appetite then you need to serve a "half time dish" too, Spike is right about the chilli, or throw a curry together using leftovers, and spice the fritters they are munching through the match and then they will have had the "indian starter" and you can then serve curry and wedges at half time! Sorry If I have picked up the stick at the wrong end but hope this helps or provides a flash of "inspiration" like some posts do on here :)

What about the healthy option.....oranges (or should it be tangerines:D).

Good luck,'We had Brett Ormerod' a few seasons ago...And for a Swansea girl, the idea of Bluebirds in the Premiership is unthikable.

Jamie Oliver did some HM kebabs last night which seemed to be quick and tasty. I don't like them myself as a rule but I did think they would be nice and easy and fast for blokes etc to do for the footy when having mates round fo beers and the game..

I tend to go for the pizza option, myself but, to keep costs down, I'll make my own or, if I'm feeling very lazy, buy a cheapie cheese and tomato one from the supermarket and add extra toppings (the RTC shelf is good for this, I find).

My mind has been focussed on the great game by the fact I live in a coastal town in the UK with a very large landmark. Now, apparently the local team have an important game at the weekend, and never one to let an occasion go uncatered, I have been toying with the idea of HM snacks for the game.

As the resident of another coastal city with a large landmark whose team has recently been to Wembley, good luck for Saturday!

You all seem to have left out the host country!

How about some sticky koeksusters (sticky doughnutty things)

a proper braai (BBQ) - with none this burgers and anaemic sausages! A proper South African one would have beef steak, lamb chops, spicy beef sausages, chicken or lamb kebabs, roast butternut all served with lots of baguette or rolls, potato salad, green salad, carrot salad and of course beer! Condiment would be Mrs Balls chutney (available from Sainsbugs), mayo and tomato sauce. A very traditional braai would also include pap (mielie meal/ corn meal) and potjiekos (stew made is a black 3 leg pot) but I don't like that much.

Another yummy dessert is melktart... similar to a custart tart.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

    Ladyhawk, now you are talking!
Just add some onion and tomato gravy to go with the pap and some chunky slices of watermelon.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
