2 litre engined Hyundai coupe's are not slow, and are superbly reliable.

My son had an F2 which he thrashed mercilessly and could not break it, something no other car except for his previous Accent could be said about.

They do have a brake situation you should know about though...if they need front discs they are fitted from inboard which means the suspension legs have to come off and the hubs removed...which results in front wheel bearings x4 being wrecked.

Therefore budget around £350+ for new front discs/pads if you do the donkey work yourself and have access to a good workshop to press the hubs and bearings on and off the carrier.
I don't know if the latest shape has the same design but it's worth checking.

Anyone know how often do they need changing?

It'll be a case of inspecting the discs through the wheels, and test driving feeling for judder/grinding and using common sense.
I seem to recall my lad's needing doing at about 80K, but as with most things depends on the previous owners tlc or lack of it.

Maybe i'm a wee bit biased as one of my cars is an MX5 and i'd have no hesitation in recommending you take a test drive in one.

    MX5 wasn't a coupe last time I checked.
OP is on the right tracks for a cheap to run coupe. In no particular order:
    Fiat Coupe (pref turbo)
    Ford Puma (definately not 1.4)
    Toyota Celica
    Honda Prelude
Honda Integra (a bit hardcore maybe)
    Hyundai Coupe
    BMW 3 series Coupe
Audi 80 coupe (if you can find one!)
Mazda MX3, MX6 (which is the same underneath as a....)
    Ford Cougar
Ford Probe (you can have a Cougar for your budget though)
    I'm sure there are more...

Sorted thanks, went for older high mileage Hyundai to see me through Xmas!
  • Good choice, hope it lives up to their normal service.
