Alot of people have commented that "post a bargain and dont let anyone get you down". Fair enough, except that the OP stated he had no idea if this was a bargain. Now whilst I agree that anybody should post a bargain if they see one, I dont think that should stem to posting prices which you have no idea how competetive they are. I dont think having a shed load of threads where the OP is unaware of a bargain or not is going to be helpful. Maybe verifying it is a bargain before posting is a better idea.

I totally agree with Shareef - if you don't know if its a bargain then why post it? Maybe we should all start posting things like 'Tescos Beans £3.20 per can' and then add, i don't know if this is a bargain or not...
As for this 'you can't buy the components for this price' nonsense - thats like saying a ford fiesta is a bargain at £10,000 because you couldn't buy all the components and build one for less.
Places like Lidl and woolworths are renowned for NOT being terribly good value but presenting it in such a way as to make you think it is - 'Laptop was £999, our price just £499' is a popular Woolworths type ploy.
Yes its great that people take the time to put a post on here but can we agree that people should take five mins to research why they believe what they are about to post IS a bargain, rather than just posting whatever happens to be on a sign in their local store?0 -
In response to the above two posts....
The reason my original post had the words "I have no idea if this is a bargain or not...." in were for many reasons:
1. To protect me from attack by idiots like Needstoknow and others who always know that they can get something cheaper no matter what it is...
2. To a starving person, a half eaten big mac in the street could save their life, other people are careful not to dirty their shoes by treading on it!!! In other words, if you are looking for a computer of this spec it might be deal of the century but to other people it is too much just for a machine to surf and type stuff up on. Ok so what I should have said is "IMO this is a bargain but then I haven't searched all of the internet to see if you can actually save £5 by driving 100 miles to collect a similar spec so I reserve the right to be wrong and apologise if I am incorrect........" get my point?
3. Whilst I appreciate your points of view, this is a thread for posting "Quick Grabbit's", not for discussing peoples posts. As was stated earlier the crap floats to the top (or in this case sinks out of view) pretty quickly, but if everyone has to fully research a bragain before posting then I predict that this forum will quickly dry up from bargains or if people do spend a few hours / days checking then the offer will be finished / sold out before people on here know of it.
4. People who disagree about this being a bargain are still yet to show me somewhere where you can buy the same or similar spec ready assembled with the same warranty, or even somewhere you can buy the parts individually for better money!!!
Finally, pgilc1, your analagy of the baked beans and ford fiesta show that it is you that is talking nonsense! Sorry but they are totally different for comparison!

Wow - not really been here for a while. Is it just this post or has everywhere else become so vicious????
For what it's worth, the Lidl & Aldi PC deals are generally accepted as good quality and value in the computer press. The specs for this machine look good for the average user, the only bit I'm unsure about is the graphics capability, although this is upgradeable if there's a problem.
Most people who buy Dells immediately ditch the cover in order to get the price down - 3 cover with this machine makes it especially good value for a new or inexperienced user.
I always build my own pc's to the spec I want and it's usually more cost effective in that I can upgrade a bit at a time. However, I'd be hard pushed to put together something of this spec at a competitive price.
Don't forget to add a monitor if it's your first computer though. You can get a 17" TFT sub £100 from Aria at the moment, or if you have space a 17" or 19" 2nd user CRT is extremely cheap while you save up for something better.
Don't bother shooting me down in flames, it's water off a ducks back.0 -
needstoknow wrote:i could build a pc of equall or better spec for a better price as could many people who have a brain btw derby county suck!
I could put one together cheaply too but if you do it for someone else and then add some pennies for your efforts (and the fact that they keep coming back for advice and help etc etc) you then push the price over what the commercial outlet charge. You cannot buy components, or the operating system, cheaper than the major manufacturers so they have a head start on you.
The majority of the people on the boards think the bus speed is related to how fast they get to the shopping centre and a router is the man who decides which bus goes where, they couldn't build a system for themselves.0 -

Unfair to link Woolworths to Lidl. The spec and backup, not to mention marketing ploys, are totally different. I would NEVER buy any of the 'bargain' pcs that Woolies have had on sale over the last few years.0 -
Couldn't agree more.MORPH3US wrote:Finally, pgilc1, your analagy of the baked beans and ford fiesta show that it is you that is talking nonsense! Sorry but they are totally different for comparison!
Furthermore, Lidl is certainly not "renowned" for not being terribly good value - it's constantly got excellent bargains, of which I have bought many.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
Thanks for jumping in with your half-baked opinion without reading the thread in full. It was claimed by one person that components bought for DIY purposes from any local PC shop would beat the price of the LIDL machine, adding up the cost of the components from my local PC shop shows that this is not the case. As for the Ford Fiesta comment, how many people build them in their spare room or attic?pgilc1 wrote:As for this 'you can't buy the components for this price' nonsense - thats like saying a ford fiesta is a bargain at £10,000 because you couldn't buy all the components and build one for less.
When did Woolworths come into the conversation? and where are LIDL considered "reknowned" for not being good value?pgilc1 wrote:Places like Lidl and woolworths are renowned for NOT being terribly good value but presenting it in such a way as to make you think it is - 'Laptop was £999, our price just £499' is a popular Woolworths type ploy.
Can we agree that people read threads in full, before missing the entire flow of the discussion?pgilc1 wrote:Yes its great that people take the time to put a post on here but can we agree that people should take five mins to research why they believe what they are about to post IS a bargain, rather than just posting whatever happens to be on a sign in their local store?0 -
All I know is that poor Morph3us will probably think long and hardbefore trying to offer help on this board again.
Morph3us began by saying it may/may not be a bargain...then you get people like needstoknow imediately criticising.........without offering any positive input.
It wouldn't be so bad if people like needstoknow had a POSITIVE contribution to make...the easiest thing in the world is to be negative, as needstoknow proved.
Mikeif i had known then what i know now0
