Freesat, the downside?

juliescot,
Perhaps I did not explain myself well enough
If you are interested in HD content then there is little on Freesat.
There is much more available on Sky.
To each their own was meant to infer that should you not wish to pay for this extra content then so be it.
Why do you comment on how much television I watch as I have given no indication of how much I watch?
There are 10 hours of BBC HD content broadcast on FreeSat every day; supplemented sometimes (and increasingly) by ITV HD.
If you regard that as "little" it gives some indication as to how much television you watch.
My point was that, from that much HD output a day, a lot of people will find two hours or more of it that they'd like to record and then view at times when they're not watching on Freeview stuff that Sky is not broadcasting in HD anyway. And for them it will be quite sufficient and well worth the one-off investment of £250.
Far from being rendered redundant by the arrival of Freeview HD, FreeSat will come into its own with the arrival of more free-to-view HD television because it is not constrained by the bandwidth restrictions which constrain terrestrially broadcast television.
I would prefer to leave to others the delicate and embarrassing task of explaining to you what the word "infer" means and how it should be used.
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Indeed Freesat and its limited HD offerings will be suited to many people's viewing.
I have no idea why you think that the number of hours broadcast in HD on Freesat has any bearing on how much TV I watch.
I said it is little, meaning to infer it is little in comparison to the HD offerings on Sky, which is true.
As I have said before, it is the content that is lacking on Freesat which leads me to choose the Sky offerings. Would that it was otherwise.
Should you have trouble with my use of the English language feel free to ask me to explain things to you in a simpler manner.
Apologies if you are not a native English speaker and some of the nuances of our language escape you.0 -
At least with Freesat you can choose which BBC local news you watch. Freeview makes us watch Yorkshire when we are in Lincolnshire. No we cannot get a signal from the Lincolnshire transmitter!0

Please forgive me. I had no intention of humiliating you and no prior awareness of your resolute determination to do so yourself.
I hope you will find this helpful in sparing you further self-inflicted public embarrassment when you are attempting to be sarcastic.
The virtues of FreeSat HD, maligned though they may be by those who bring to bear the wealth of knowledge and experience derived from never having experienced it themselves, are probably best appreciated by those who do.
We strive, nevertheless, to alert others on MSE to how good it is, how free it is and how much we like it ourselves. We feel that that is the purpose of this website and are anxious that others considering it should not be deterred from sharing that same enjoyment by the derogatory comments of those who are ignorant personally of what in practice FreeSat HD offers for a one-off investment of £245.
We recognise your absolute right to deprive yourself of it if you so wish and to give Sky as much of your money as you desire.
I hope that clarifies things and enables the thread now to get fully back on topic.

I thank you for taking the time and trouble to correct my usage of language.
Always happy to learn and develop.
If Freesat showed the programmes I wish to watch then I would happily ditch Sky.
Unfortunately it does not, perhaps one day it will.
Who has been making derogatory comments about Freesat?0 -
I just wanted to say I have a HD Freesat Humax PVR and its great, Why? because I live in a new build so I had to decide and pay for an aerial or dish. I can get any region I like important as I live in Wales but am English. I can get all the HD content that I pay for with my licence fee but I am not going slowly bankrupt with SKY. I know I will get all new HD in the future.
I have full access to all the Red button, In particular the old re runs of F1 highlights, this proves to me I don't really care about picture quality as they are really rubbish, its content that matters.0 -
Sky channels are complete waste of money anyway so you're not missing anything worth watching by getting Freesat
thats untrue if you like sport or films then sky is the best.[/QUOTE]
Ashamed to say that I am getting totally confused by all this.
I watch TV in my little bedroom from 7pm to only about 10.30pm (poor health and strong meds). I'm not impressed with my TV which is small and a few years old now...and, it no longer allows me to view one prog and tape another. I have found a smallish WHITE TV at John Lewis (I hate black ones) so I will be buying this. Now, all I want is something I can record films with and which has a hard drive. Thats where I'm at. Last night I realised that I don't watch much of the Freeview programmes so Freesat would probably be a waste for me. Looks like a DVD recorder will be the best thing for me.
By the way, I seem to remember that SKY shows a lot of films I have already seen and I never watch sport.0 -

I start my viewing in the evening with Channel 4 news (no local stuff). It's the best! There is a woman on BBC local news who irritates me tremendously so my second choice is ITV local news.0 -
juliescot,
No harm done.
I imagine it was just an impulsive case of "infer" a penny, "infer" a pound, on your part... ()
But at least you fired both barrels into the same foot. Once you've removed the buckshot I don't suppose it will leave an enduring scar.
Hope it's taught you to check that you've closed the breech before you fire the gun, next time.
Enjoy your FeeView!

What do you mean, "at least"? That's extremely useful, along with the local weather forecast. Don't be diffident about it!
You also neglected to mention – as you in particular will be aware - that one can be naughty and sneak a FreeSat box (or television) abroad to anywhere within its not inconsiderable satellite footprint, which you can't do with Freeview except in the Pas de Calais, the Cotentin peninsula and a few coastal parts of Normandy.
MX5huggy,
I have full access to all the Red button, In particular the old re runs of F1 highlights, this proves to me I don't really care about picture quality as they are really rubbish, its content that matters.
But it's a shame there's no equivalent of Freeview's "301", so it can be recorded. Have you ever found a way to do that?
Still, it's a godsend to be able to watch the races, qually and practice with the stimulating commentary of the Radio Five Live team instead of the appalling and unrelenting drone of Jonathan Legard. Saves me having to switch to RTL in German on our old Astra analogue kit, as I used to do, to escape the flaming trousers harangues of Murray Walker.

Interesting you should mention the radio on Freeview there.
I see that there is a proposal to remove a large number of BBC radio stations from the Freeview platform, evenings only, to accommodate BBC Alba.
Not sure if this is a Scotland only proposal0
