It is worth bearing in mind that some (i don't know about all) tips sell of products such as electrical items cheaply to people that need them.If it becomes a last resort for you.I've heard the other side of the story too,someone who got a great bargain by becoming friendly with the guy who worked there.

You could also give your local Womens Aid a ring, there are lots of mums and kiddies who hopefully will be rehomed and they wont have a tv etcHe who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
If you really cant knit very well, then practise drumming with the needles...
