  • Fool your neighbours into thinking you have an expensive gravel drive by sellotaping rice krispies to your car tyres.
  • Did any of you see Quentin Wilson (Does some of the driving progs?) on BBC breakfast last week. He was on talking about how to check your tyre treads and how many people are driving with illegal tyres just now. Get a 20 pence piece and put it against your tread of your tyre, if you CAN'T see the writing on the side of your coin then it is legal. If you CAN see the writing on the side of the coin then the tread is illegal. Check several parts of the tyre obviously, saves you going to a garage and taking their word for it that its illegal.
Although the legal limit is 1.6mm, many people now seem to recommend around 3mm to change your tyres.

Is it true that Kwick Fit were prosecuted for selling old tyres? I heard they were blowing out on the motorway, any truth in the rumour?

Don't know about that one but they were on watchdog a few years ago for fitting second hand shock absorbers and saying they were new.

I had a puncture a while back and had to buy a replacement tyre in KwikFit. I ended up going for their budget tyre - Arrowspeed at a price of £46.50. I was informed by the fitter that I needed another 2 tyres as they were nearing their legal limit. I though £46.50 was a bit steep so drove away with just the one. The next day, found my local tyre dealer would fit Pirelli P6's for £41.00 ! That's a premium tyre fitted for less than the price of a KwikFit budget tyre ! An equivalent to the KF budget tyres could be fully fitted for £32.

Managed to get a refund of the difference from KF but not without a fight despite their advertised 'Price promise'. Not a terribly courteous member of staff at KF who refused point blank to offer their Price Promise because the budget tyre was not the exact same as theirs (but only KwikFit sell Arrowspeed) That's despite the fact that their website says the tyre should be 'of comparable specification'. Eventually managed to get him to agree a 'discretionary refund' but only when I asked him for his name so that I could refer him to his Head Office customer services dept..

IMO kwik fit are a rip off.... i know from now on i will go to a local guy and buy part worn with approx 6mm/7mm tread for £20 each fitted. I recently went to Kwik fit and was charged nearly £80 for 1 tyre, I needed it done quick due to a 5" nail in it, thats when i started looking about localy its well worth the time especially if your not a car snob and are willing to have different tyres on.

I cringe when i hear of people paying silly money for tyres...do people not shop about or do they just go to places like kwik fit without thinking,

linzi, i used to work at KF, and i was suprised by the attitude of some of the customers. often, you would get the 'i just put petrol in and drive it' types who would say 'just do whatever it needs' ...needless to say they would end up with a big bill. so i think some people just either dont have the time to shop around or just cant be bothered!

i myself wouldnt dream of going near KF...i find the smaller tyre companies in my area often undercut each other for your business.
  • I had an unexpected flat tyre yesterday.. went straight to E.T.B which was just round the corner... my tyre was knackered. a new one cost £28 not too bad i think..
we have a new kf being built now but i won't be using it..not impressed by them... support the smaller retailers.

  • Camskill are by far the best I've dealt with for tyres online, no chance would I ever step foot into Kwik Fit after the horror stories I've heard!
