I cringe when i hear of people paying silly money for tyres... i have never paid over £35 for a new tyre thats fitted & balanced on a range of wheels 14" 15" 16" and currently 17" and they last the same as the ones you pay £70 for...... do people not shop about or do they just go to places like kwik fit without thinking, i go to my local Mr Mechanic buy the tyres then take them to a small side street garage and have them fitted and balanced £5 each
before anyone comes back saying oh but your tyres wont last as long try it the next time you need 4 tyres put 3 of your expensive ones on and 1 budget bet you will be suprised0 -

There are a lot of things to think about when buying tyres.
Grip, tyre wear, price are just three. Generally the more grip you get, the softer the tyre compound will be, thus making the tyre wear quicker, you need to look for a happy medium of grip and wear.
I totally agree that people pay silly money for tyres, but if you have a car where tyres are more important (sportier cars with lower profile tyres) you really need to research into correct tyre choice when buying new ones, then do your internet searches to find the cheapest online, before going to your friendly independant tyre fitter who will usually be able to match that price.
I would never reccomend putting 2 different tread tyres on one axle as this can make your car behave erratically making you more likely to lose control of your vehicle.

On the checking of tread depth.
No need to get someone to get their little dial out you can do it by feel and naked eye.
The groove in the tyre you can feel around with your finger. You will come across a raised section. This is set at 1.6mm or the legal tread depth.
Have a feel round. If the raised section is at your tyre level, time for a change otherwise you have a bit more time on your hands.

Gives you a good indication on if you will actually need them or trying to con.
Kwikfit near me always told me i needed new brakes. Even when I was replacing a puncture I had replaced the tyres on a week before and had the brakes done then as I knew they needed doing.August Make £10 per day £0/£310Credit Card Debt Paid Off £42/2952.680 -
Give 'hometyre' a try - website as you'd imagine, .co.uk. They come and fit at your home or workplace are competitively priced and do the job right.
They don't operate in all areas thats the only drawback, although they are slowly expanding nationally.0 -

It depends on what is required though! I need 235/35/19 for my car so hence the high price of £170 per tyre as they are large and low profile.
Dont really mind the price tbh as I knew when I got the alloys for my car from the dealership that the tyres wouldnt be cheap! So no point in me complaining about the price now!0 -
Her you all go. Blind yourselves with all the tyre science you could ever wish for http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/utqg-advice.html

you just never know when you may have to navigate up the steep gradient and rough terrain of a kerb in your V8 4X4 or whether you need the +155mph speed rated tyres recommended by the manufacturer (paid to put the tyres on the factory vehicle by bridgestone/ pirelli)0 -

I've just used Blackcircle for the first time today and just returned from having two new tyres fitted. I have been looking at prices for new tyres all week and following the links and recommendations. I paid £73 for two tyres 175/70 and seems very good value although appreciate there is a range of prices and quality. Staff were polite and service quick. I was quoted a similar price just for one tyre from my main dealer. Thanks for all the tips.:j0
