People who used to build their own computers now buy from dell? WHAT CRAP... Dell are better than most, but you still get far better components by doing a DIY computer. The only way its cheaper to buy a dell than DIY, is with their cheap entry level computers, and someone prepared to build their own wouldnt even consider those anyway. When it comes to decent computers, you cannot do better than a DIY.

Get one of these, and if you don't think it's good enough buy another better one for the same price next year (when Vista comes out) with the money you have saved. Or put the money in the kids piggy bank.

    Add this upgrade,

Dell E176FP 17" Midnight Grey (TCO99) Flat Panel Monitor [add £22.33]

Takes you to about £400 delivered after scrapping the 3 year warranty (which you won't need!).
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Steve,
Have you ever bought a computer from the Ankerman site? They do have very good prices! Being in the Netherlands, is backup support any good?

Hi...no I haven't bought a computer from Ankerman...it was on another chat thread...however, I'm going to buy a new one from there. The prices seem very good and their warranty terms seem much the same as Dell's collect and return option. Most people advise on this site that an extended warranty is not worth the money...so I think their prices make it worth a punt.

    Build your own.

Write down all the components and what you want it for, multi media for example and hand pick them.

Bit of advice is look out for a good deal on a mobo and processor all in one deal, usually they throw in a decent fan also.

Then get yourself a resonable priced pc building book (if you don't know how to do it) and you're away.

It's better than some cheap o.e.m. PC with flat rate processors, probably work out cheaper if you find decent suppliers of hardware.
  • Thanks everyone I will check it all out.

leesmithg- I will not be able to build my own, because I have no idea about these things

    Cheers everyone!!!!!!!

Btw- is Pentium D- a good processor?
  • hi...I was put onto this site in a previous thread http://ankermann-pc.co.uk/

They have some great deals on there and you can upgrade if you want to...check it out.Delivery is only £17.00 as opposed to Dells £60.00. You are not pressured by limited time offers like Dell.

Steve I have had a look on this website, however it seems as if you have to pick all the different things you want on the computer and I haven't got a clue!!

It seems good, not that I know much, but isn't it a bit pricey?

    Bargin...
This is the basic set up...I'm sure it will do everything you want...and more. You just click on the options offered...no need to choose extra ram etc or drivers or power supply...add a monitor and keyboard etc.NB There is no operating system but these can be bought from the site.
    Cheers
