my wife is not the brightest penny

When I met my wife I was about 6 years younger than her going by the birth date she gave me 1939. Years later we bought a house and got an endowment policy on it. A few years after this we decided to go to Australia for a holiday, we needed passports and my wife also needed a birth certificate to get hers. So I sent off for a copy we got one it said she was born in 1942. She and her brother both said this was not right I did'ent care and used it to get her passport. I got another endowment policy when we bought a bigger house I told the insurance man that the birthdate was wrong according to this latest birth certificate he said we would just keep it at 1939 to avoid problems. Years later I decided to get the birth issue sorted out so I sent off for another birth certificate telling them the 1942 one was wrong. They sent another birth certificate saying she was born in 1935 making her 10 years older than me. I just let things go along the next decade. My wife is now in ill health I sarted thinking about these endowment policies with the wrong birth date for her. What will happen when it becomes time for these to be paid out will I have problems?:rotfl:

So your wife pointed out that the birth certificate date was incorrect, yet you decided to use it anyway, and it is her that is not the brightest penny?
  • Personally, I would divorce her for lying to you about her age for all these years.

Genealogy is a growing web based activity. It requires hours/days of of patience and a lot of luck, determination and practice. You can find out exactly who you are with some research.

  • GavB79 my wife told me the 1942 birth certificate was wrong which I used to get a passport for her as there was not time to get another birth certificate then due to the holiday coming up she never told me that her real birth date was 1935 . Thanks to the other two repliers even though my question has not yet been answered. Could someone tell me what the insurance company are likely to do about this? I have been paying for the policy for nearly twenty years.

No financial advice but i am wondering how you have lived all these years not knowing how old she is? What have you been doing at birthdays etc?

    How utterly bizarre :/

It may be that women lie about their age. I always thought that my father's sister was the youngest of their generation. It turns out she was the oldest by far. She had a husband who died early in her first marriage and managed to look young enough to attract another.
I still have a few credits left to peruse parish records. The address at which ancestors have lived may be a better key to narrowing down who was born when.

Sorry no advice on the insurance, but yes it seems bizarrre to lie about your age , but it appears that my half sister has done just that - she is 29, but insists she is 28 and tells everyone she was born in 1981 when infact it was 1980! Why? Particularly when you are only in your 20's!

How on earth did you manage to get a birth certificate with the wrong dates? Surely the parents names and location etc would be wrong? If you do want to know the accurate date I will try and use my subscription to a genealogy site to have a look into it if you pm me her name and birth location I'll see what I can find - if it is an internationsl birth, I may not have access - maybe you don't have a problem and she was born in 1939.
