Engine oil light

When I turn on the ignition the oil light comes on and stays on until I start the car. Why is this? The car is a 1998 1.0 Corsa. Only just bought it and a bit worried.

We checked the oil and it was hard to tell because I think the oil is new, it is not black yet. We added some oil incase. Is it okay then? As long as it doesn't come on when I'm driving?0
