There is no such thing as a free lunch - if you get a cheque from an unknown source there is no way it should be banked BEFORE finding out its whereabouts.

As I said before - the ''drawer'' of the cheque's account will be ok as the bank will refund them when the fraud is found out - they will then investigate which bank account it was paid into and then the fun starts - you may well be implicated in the scam. Your account will then be debited back of course 2 - 4 - 6 will not apply!

As I previously posted it is highly likely that you will have sent back the money using one of your own cheques so you will be down by the amount of the scam.

Where has all the common sense gone from you people!

That's my thoughts exactly. Where do people suggesting the cheque should be banked think it's come from? Cheques for huge amounts of money don't just land on your doormat unless it's a scam.

The fact that there are SO many people willing to walk into a scam explains why there are so many scammers out there.

Oh well. Don't say you weren't warned. Can't wait to read the follow up "Help! Bank's suspended my account and I'm being investigated for fraud' threads.

It won't say that though will it - they will just say HELP my bank has just closed my account!:rotfl:

I totally agree, as I said earlier, if it's too good to be true, it probably is! And it is scary how many of you are advising to wait and see and then put the cheque in.. :rotfl:

Spoke to a very nice policeman in the fraud department, he contacted Halifax and it is a fake cheque. The account number is one digit short! He was quite interested as its a new run of cheques - they haven't seen any like these yet, and they don't most commonly get sent out anonymously.

I am waiting to see whether I will be contacted again, to be asked for money. I will ignore them - but I would take great delight in referring them to the Police, who are fingerprinting the cheque!

Despite many people who told me to shred it, I am glad I know for sure now - although of course I suspected from the beginning (hence the post!).

    Thanks to everyone,
    Have a nice night!

Thanks for coming back to tell us.

It will be interesting to see if you hear anything from the scammers!
