Help! I've been sent a cheque!

Thats not true. After 6 days the money is yours, it can only bounce if you are a knowing party to fraud, which in this case they aren't.

How would OP justify having £7k paid into their account from an unknown source???0 -
It really is astonishing, the number of people who say, "I found some money" / "I had money transfered into my account by mistake" / "I received a cheque I wasn't expecting", etc, etc, etc, who then make a post asking what will happen if they effectively commit theft and keep the cash
Assuming this cheque ISN'T related to fraud (which it most likely is), the cheque obviously isn't intended for the recipient since they presumably have no dealings with the sender and weren't expecting it.0 -
I agree that it does indeed sound like a massive scam which indeed could cause you lots of trouble if you was silly enough to use the cash, IF it cleared.(Which I doubt it will) I admit though I would open a brand new account specially for this Cheque and THIS CHEQUE ONLY and like mentioned by LazyDaisy just leave it alone for many years, definately more than two years though....
Following on from the above poster, I would also use a different bank which I had no previous connection with so that other accounts can not be affected.
Obviously you don't realise you have a thing called a credit rating which will affect everything you do that regards finance?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

I've given up saying this though cause I kept getting jumped upon by people saying that the OP didn't want moral advice. Doesn't make it any less of a theft though.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Wow, thanks for all the replies! I have an appointment with my local police, fraud department, on Monday.
While I realise that there is every possibility that this is some sort of scam, it doesn't follow any of the common scam formats (the Police said that today) and so I would like to at least try and make sure its fake (etc) rather than just burning it.
I am not expecting money (as I said) but I am an opportunistic person who enters every competition they come across - so long as I want the prize! So there is a small (I know, emphasis on small) chance this is a prize. And it wouldn't be the first anonymous no-information-enclosed prize to arrive on my doorstep - although never cash before!
At the moment I am waiting for Monday and will see what the Police say.

Is there a name printed on the cheque above the signature line?0

Read my post again. Read the link from the BBA:
"You are protected from any loss if the cheque subsequently bounces, unless you are a knowing party to a fraud."
Once again - you are protected from loss after 6 days unless you are a knowing party to fraud. The OP appears not to know of any fraud. If you disagree with myself and the BBA please can you post a source as I believe you are incorrect (and a Man Utd fan, who in general are well known for talking rubbish - no offence!).0 -
If it's too good to be true then it probably is! I would hand to police or bank and be done with it... Seriously if it was a competition then you'd not just receive it in the post like that for that amount of cash they'd want some publicity whoever it was, or at least have some other form of correspondence.

The OP isn't expecting a cheque. The cheque could well be stolen, in which case I wouldn't be surprised if the bank reclaim the money later and say the OP banked a cheque which they weren't expecting and knew wasn't really for them.0
