  • Change the MAF/AMM. It's the first thing we used to replace on them early TDi's. 9 times out of 10 it worked. On the odd occasion it was the timing belt which had jumped a tooth or a cam sensor.

Do you know someone else with a similar car who you can try an airflow meter from? £50 is a lot of money to throw away if this is not the problem. No offense to harveybobbles but I would want to know it would definitely cure the problem before spending the money. A local VW specialist might have one sitting on a shelf that you could try?

The compression test :money: can also indicate a jumped cam belt. No way would I adopt a scatter gun approach to diagnostic. Harvey can gloat if he's right but as he's now chucked 2 more possibilities into the frame it could cost you dearly to prove him right or wrong.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • It would be cheaper simply to unplug the MAF before you replace it. No change would normally indicate the MAF is dead.

A VW garage can connect VAGCOM software up to it and scan for fault codes :money:
  • But will they do it for less than £50...?

True, but I'd be for putting one one anyway so you know its really on song.

Failing that, i'll buy the Passat off you.

I'm really grateful for the replies folks but I am lost in technicalities.

TBH £50 or £100 I know is a lot of money (I just paid a shi**y garage £86 to replace a pipe to the turbo and nothing was any different!) but I would spend loads more than that if I used scrappage scheme and got a new car nowehere near as good as my old passat.

The solutions sound great but I'm not sure if my local garage would be as good as you guys.

How do I find the right plkace to go for them to do as you suggest, and what is it I need to do again

    replace air flow filter
    have a compression test
    anything else?
  • Get a grip man. It's just a car. Scrap it and buy a Toyota Prius Hybrid, you will be amazed how cheap they are to run. I get about 90mpg
