Sounds more than likely as simple as a slipping clutch to me. I can't remember the exact details but I believe the way to check for a slipping clutch is to try set off in either 3rd or 5th, don't remember which. If the car stalls the clutch is probably fine, or something like that.

If it is the clutch and the car is to be kept any longer I'd be trying to find out whether the engine is a non-interference one, and if not consider the entire cost of new clutch + timing belt renewal, and keeping it a few more years versus as you say scrappage etc. You can almost guarantee if you pay a few hundred to get the clutch done, the timing belt will probably soon go ping wiping out all the cash you put into the car.

Neighbour has a one on a R plate, and it has similar mileage, and that has a bit of a struggle on hills as well.

    It's the 1.9td he has.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Why not listen to him? Loads of experience, knows what he's talking about, usually! Sounds likely anyway. If still not convinced, there must be VW forums where you could get informed answers.

? thanks for all the great replies and am paying great credence to them all, I think I may have to print out this correspondence to take to my garage tho!

Not sure what a YUP MAF AMM or !!!!!! are - or am I being very gently set up??

Thanks all, Garage will be early next week so will get back to you then

Btw did go in to talk to dealer abt new car today tho - on scrappage scheme - I could not get a price without leaveing my name, address, age, marital status and similar details about my car. I took fright and ran! (but not without first telling them to delete my details according to the DP act!)

If I was you, i'd forget the rest and get hold of a !!!!!!, more usefull than those other "parts".
Might be an idea to underseal your "chassis" first tho!!

    Is it diesel or petrol?

Does the car seem to lose power after you've gone over a certain amount of revs?

Is everything else on the car in good nick, bodywork suspension aircon etc?

sorry, its a diesel. 1.9TDI - the old 85bhp version
