Damaged iPhone

Hey all :)

Only had my iPhone a few months & have noticed a crack running from the silencer button to the silver lining. Its kept in a case at all times & has not been dropped. I've googled this & it seems that it is a fairly common problem. Solution- take to Apple store & they will replace on the spot. However, I don't have an Apple store near me. Can I take it to o2 or will they not do anything about it?

Thanks.

Try O2 first and if they won't do anything, ring Apple.
  • I think if you give it to O2, they would simply send it off to have it checked to determine if it is a manufacturers defect or not. If it is then they would either send it off to the Apple for repair or replacement on your behalf. I doubt they would do a straight swap as you've had the phone for quite some time and they wouldn't do it without checking it out first.

But as mentioned in another thread, the handset is your responsibility once in your possession, and O2 are not obligated to do anything for you unless its a manufacturers defect. But theres no harm contacting O2 to see what they can do for you, otherwise you'll have to deal directly with Apple who may supply a quicker solution to you.

    Good luck.

It will take an age to get O2 to sort it.

And you will be without an iPhone.

I know you say your not close to an apple store. But in my opinion it would be worth a day trip out to go to one. As if it is within warranty they will just swap it there and then.

As my wifi had been playing up. Took it to a apple store and they tested it. (the wifi even worked in there shop) But the guy said we will just sawp it for another one.

    Had no problems since.

    Great service from apple.
  • Thanks all. After reading into the whole repair/replace options with the iPhone, it definatly seems the best solution to take it into an Apple store. I've booked a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow, so I'll let you know how I get on!

If they do offer a replacement, would I be able to ask for the black version as I've read the cracks are not as visable?

Just noticed there are small hairline cracks around the USB port & speakers too!

I googled the problem & yes it is common, particularly on the white ones (which I have). Maybe because they are a lot less visable on the black ones.

I phoned up the store closest to me & they were very appologetic. Told me they would either replace or repair on the spot, providing its under warrenty. Although I have been told that they can't repair the back panel so most just get a replacement. I'll let you know how I get on Saturday.

yep my friend has the same problem on his iphone 3gs white and he wasnt too happy with the condition of his iphone so hes using this as an excuse to get a reconditioned one. They do a swap for a reconditioned one as long as they deem it a internal crack.

He found out about this so called internal crack from a friend and basically his friend had a iphone and has the small internal cracks which doesnt effect the phone in anyway however he drops his phone, smashes the screen. The guy at apple tells him that the phone repair will cost 130 or so on. Then the apple guy starts inspecting the phone and tell him ''ow you have a internal crack, id have to give you a replacement'' So long story short the apple guy is a decent guy and helps him out and gives him a new handset.
  • I got given a reconditioned one yesterday. They put a brand new screen, button and cover on & got it replaced fairly easily. However, on close inspection, the reconditioned one has 2 cracks! One by the silencer button & one by the volume button so I give up!

Please take it back to Apple. They will replace it again on the spot. I have never heard of them putting a new screen, button etc on, and replacing? What do you mean?

The recon phones are identical to new ones. In fact, chances are, they ARE new ones, according to rumour! If there are cracks in, then someone has slipped up badly in the manufacturing process.

If getting to an Apple store is difficult, then give them a ring. At worst they will take a credit card deposit, send out a replacement and pick up for the faulty one, and delete the deposit when they get the faulty one back.
