Laptop charger... Not charging!

Toshiba reckon a new charger is £60!
Do we need a charger for the same model or will any Toshiba charger work, a bit like with Nokia's?
If not can someone advise of a place that sells them cheaper!
So confused now, not sure what to do. I'm not sending the laptop in when another charger works perfectly. It seems as though the laptop is fine afterall. Now we need to buy a new one and hope for the best.
Have a mate with an old Toshiba charger, whether that will work/is safe I dont know. 60 quid fora new one?!0 -
You just need one with the same voltage output and a compatible pin. One of the universal chargers should do it, most independent computer shops (Not PCW) sell them. Trust is the most common brand. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Thanks mate, talk about laptop expert! Didnt think you could get universal charger's for laptops. Toshiba told me I need to buy a new one of the same model.
Probably a silly question, but as our old charger takes alot of playing with to charge the laptop, do you think it's a new charger we need? i mean we borrowed one today which worked perfectly0 -
Well, that would be the logical conclusion. If you go to an independent shop they may well let you try it before you buy.No free lunch, and no free laptop

It's doing my head in. Think we'll have to cancel Toshiba taking it in just in case, and buy a new charger. If only they gave us two eh! Oh well suppose it's better than the laptop being knackered...0

Since Tosh have been so obliging, why don't you return the faulty charger to them and ask them to replace it under warranty? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Just a quick word of warning if you look on ebay, you can find chargers going for £20+ but a very large proportion are quite dangerous fakes not built manufacturers standards or even to european safety standards (but might well have a dodgy looking sticker claiming to).
usually these do work ok but have a habit of spontaneously bursting into flames after anything from a few days to few years (if still working)0 -
Thanks for the advice about ebay.
By the way strangely Toshiba will take the laptop for repair but the charger is a different matter. They say that isn't covered in the warranty.
I could send them the laptop and they charge me £40 to look at it and to tell me it's fine and the charger is the problem. I then get back the laptop the same as I sent it and have to pay them £40 plus another £60 for a charger!0 -
Right, just been swapping the lead that goes from our 'brick' and the mates lead about, it's definitely the middle brick bit thats the problem. With his charge it works fine.
Now we have to sort out a new charger, it can't be the laptop surely0 -
