There's also Neal's Yard Remedies. They do all kinds of stuff, sell online (https://www.nealsyardremedies.com) and seem to be very ethical - I'm pretty sure they don't test on animals. I've used their Rosemary &thyme shampoo and would highly recommend it, but it isn't cheap!0

Actually, following on from my previous post, I just found this on their website so it looks like they are OK.
RSPCA Alternative Awards
We were delighted to be presented with an award recently at this prestigious awards event.
"These companies are blazing a trail for animal welfare by putting kindness and social responsibility at the heart of their business model," said RSPCA director general, Jackie Ballard.
Neal’s Yard Remedies was ‘Highly Commended for the Cosmetics Category Commitment to improving animal welfare’.
We have never carried out animal testing and are accredited by the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection). This means that we have a fixed cut off date for our ingredients having not been tested on animals and all our suppliers of ingredients are audited on a regular basis.0 -
God this cruelty free malarky is so confusing. Some of the consumer websites state that Clinique (part of estee lauder) is animal friendly whereas others don't.
Estee Lauder's own website states:
"The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. utilizes state-of-the-art testing methods to insure the safety and efficacy of our products. All of our ingredients and formulations are tested in vitro and on human volunteers. We do not test our ingredients or finished products on animals, nor do we ask others to conduct animal testing on our behalf. The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. has no intention of testing on animals in the future."
What i want are good products (i like clinique very much) that have no ingrediants tested on animals or comply with the cut off date rule (not the rolling rule).
Anybody got the inside track on this?
Also, for basics such as cheap n cheerful dandruff shampoo for OH where's best for cruelty free? Co-op?
I've had a look through some of the recommended products but it's hard to know where to start.0 -
I've approached toiletries from the minimal-chemical angle, but as far as I am aware, the brands I've ended up with are also cruelty free (if I'm wrong, please tell me).
We use a combination of Green People, which has already been mentioned, Faith In Nature and Duchy (as in Prince Charles).DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
urban_spirit wrote:Some companies choose the wording in-store or on their packaging very carefully. For example:-
If they claim their products are not tested on animals that can mean that the ingredients of the products are tested on animals.
If they claim they do not test products or ingredients on animals that can mean that someone on their behalf does.
I alwyas check the BUAV booklet or any alterantive company that has the welfare of animals at the centre of its operations.
Hope this helps
I agree!! It involves loads of paperwork for the company and chasing the suppliers of ingredients, so although I dont think you can ever be 100% sure that the product/ingredient isnt tested on animals, this is probably the best way to check (faith in nature is nice!!).
Also household cleaners etc are tested as well - but astonish range isnt and is BUAV approved - you can buy theit stuff from 99p at home and bargain - so thats ultimate moneysaving plus being kind to nature!!!
You can buy Kingfisher toothpaste from holland and barrett...but at the moment its £2.50 (use the pennies you saved in home and bargain to get!!)
The mint ones lovely and tastes of softmints...yum...

Oh no:eek:
This is my first look on this thread and I never knew L'oreal still tested on animals! I won't be buying ANY of there stuff again! It's disgusting in this day and age that such a massive company are still in the dark ages!
Also, excuse my ignorance but as I said I'm new to this board! What about Avon?0 -
i think avon used to say they didnt test, but thats disappeared now from their packaging etc...so it doesnt bode well. Theyre not approved by BUAV either.

I know, it's shocking when you discover something like this, it doesn't help when companies don't state on the labels who they're owned by, a few yrs ago I bought a 'Seeds of Change' pasta sauce & then discovered that they're owned by Masterfoods who are Mars  (have avoided them for yrs & now never buy Masterfoods.)
'The Good Shopping Guide, Your Guide To Shopping With A Clear Conscience' is excellent, new addition out in Sept.
Also Nestle (1 of the most boycotted companies on the planet) have a 46% share in L'oreal.

Some of the ethical websites are confusing too. Even BUAV still has the body shop listed as a company to go for when their parent company are so utterly evil!
I'm going to Lush today to try out some of their stuff. I've not always gotten on with their shampoo (i have senstive skin and a lot of hair) but i think it's worth another go as they seem like such an ethical company.
Am trying to get the OH to use animal friendly products too. I did let him buy some tescos own brand shampoo as it had a good animal friendly blurb on the back.
I know some of you may tell me to go nowhere near tescos but i'm still muddling my way through this and I still rely on tescos too much - i am trying to reduce this though!!0 -

This companies products seem reasonably priced (not tried them yet as only just found site) and you can add the aromatherapy oils of your choice to basic moisturiser, shampoo and bath stuff if you don't fancy the 'ready mades' (see towards the bottom of the page)0
