The account had been randomly flagged for fraud due to unusual online activities (of which there were none)
Sounds like their fraud pattern detection algorithm is flawed.

    What a joke.

Same thing happened to my brother. He has a Cash account which he opened couple years ago but never used it. He has start using it from last month. His salary is coming in, no large deposits etc.

Cannot use online banking, cannot withdraw cash from cash machine so he went to the branch. He was told card has been blocked - not sure why. He went into the branch again today and was told Barclays has sent him a letter today giving him 14 days and the account will be closed by the fraud dept. No reason.

  • Interesting.... I won't be letting this go lightly... not sure how they think they can get away with it.

He might have misused his account.
  • What I find about that though, if that was the case for any of us, why not totally block account usage? I am able to go into the branch and perform any number of transactions / withdrawals / payments / transfers as long as done in person... not sure about others but seems odd to me.

No - I have seen his bank statements - its normal running account, I cant see any misuse - Salary is coming at £1600 a month. no unpaid direct debts, not been overdrawn.

He can perform the transaction online in person but cannot use his card in cash machine, shops or access internet banking

    Not sure. MS

This probably because he did not use the account for such a long time so they may have been suspicious that all of a sudden the account was being used.
I had problem many years ago with Barclays as they can cancelled my debit card because there were more card transactions than usual- as I politely explained YES BECAUSE IT IS CHRISTMAS. And I work for them!!!!

Then you should know that we do not suspend card usage just because it's used more than it regularly is.

What I'd be interested to know is: has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, it happened to me as well. Had to call them and it took them 2 weeks to sort it out.
