I just want it to be as zippy as possible and be good for watching tv shows/films! Ive had a look through various reviews but its all going a bit over my head tbh.
Thanks 4743hudsonj! I wouldnt have a clue how to put one together on my own lol. Ive also looked at the Sony NW20SF Laptop, does it seem any good?
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6600
(2.2Ghz, 800Mhz, 2MB Cache)
Genuine Windows(R) 7 Home Premium
4GB Memory
320GB Hard drive
Ive been warned off dells tbh...
Thank you all so much for your advice! Im extremely grateful.
well itll zip along fine but it depends how much of your £800 budget you want to spend, if youd prefer to spend less then that nw series is more than enough, just dont expect to play games on it though
if you dont mind spending more then i do suggest the fw series....
its got a large screen, its got the full 16:9 aspect ratio which means no letterboxing when watching films (its noticeably wider than standard laptops)
you dont have to have such a maxed out spec but i put one together on their site that could play modern games at medium quality with a solid fps rating and do any tasks quickly, youd struggle to slow it down basically.
if your interested i dont mind putting together a more detailed quide to using their configuring system to create the laptopBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -
I'm using my third Sony Vaio and they certainly zip along (especially now that I have Windows 7 installed). My OH decided to use the second one when I upgraded.
They're very reliable and I highly recommend.
If you choose a Sony ensure that the operating system is Windows 7 - not Vista!
Good luck0 -
I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop that I've had for about a year and a half. I had a desktop too that was a few years old and carried on using that as y primary machine out of habit. However, when Windows 7 landed on my doorstep, I formatted my HDDand removed all the useless stuff Sony loaded it with and I can't believe how quick it is. I've now gotten rid of my old desktop and use my Vaio as my one and only machine.......They fantistic, so much so that I'm already lining up my next, just got to save the £2000 for it now!
What about this one for yourself? You can confirgure it to have a bigger HDD (500gb), 4gb of RAM and a better graphics card for £809.00. And its got a 16.4" display:

Seems odd that you wouldn't be buying it for iLife, considering you're into music and photos and whatnot.
You're not going to get anything comparable with any non-Apple computer, no matter how much you spend.
iTunes is also a more pleasant experience on a Mac than a PC.0 -

He's OP said he's only looking to store music, photo's et so iLife wouldn't be essential. The Sony Vaio I suggsted for £809 was a much better spec machine than the £800 MacBook. In fact, even if you spent £1000 specing the MacBook up it would still have half the RAM and a much slower processor than the £809 Vaio, not to mention its other shortcomings.0 -

Thanks SO much for your help! Well Im actually a she! :rotfl:
I know Mac users LOVE their little machines, but I think the normal screen size is going to be an issue for me. I would want the pro and although I could push to get it- I think it would probably be wasted on me. I get that the iLife software looks really good, but Im not sure that its worth the extra money that it costs for me to jump up to a 15" screen.
Ive now almost decided that Im getting a sony! I really appreciate everyones help though. I would be in a right pickle without it.
I just now need to decide whether to go with the £809 Vaio or a slightly cheaper version. Please dont roll your eyes when you read this next bit...But I really fancy a white one! Blame the white Macbook."Whoever said that money doesn't buy happiness didn't know where to shop."0 -
Sony's a good choice. I've had another quick look at the Vaio site and saw this white one for £700:

Although , in my opinion, I would spend the extra £100 and get the one I suggested earlier, a vastly superior machine. Hope it helps you make a decision.

Sometimes you just need to use this place as a sounding board, to reassure yourself that what wanted you wanted to do all along is the right way to go.
That's what it and we are here for.
Enjoy your Vaio!
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.
