As already advised-go to crucial.com and use the system scanner, this will scan your sytem and advise the RAM upgrade options. Though I'm guessing you have 2 slots, one already with 0.5GB, the other empty. So probably best to buy 2 new 1GB modules. But see what it says.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Was it slow when you bought it? Programs like spyware doctor, pcpitstop, StartManSvc.exe, registry mechanic, Reader_sl.exe, jusched.exe, won't help.

The quick answer is backup your data, and reset it to factory settings. More ram will also help.

It should run it within your browser displaying the result in a minute or so.
Alternatively you can check manually by using the pull down menus to select the make/model/number.

  • I just wanted to jump into this thread as I also have a cr*ppy e-system machine from PC World. Granted it is years old and I'm currently grappling with McAfee (thanks for all your help over that Rik, Kaspersky on its way) but is it really worth the bother of upgrading the RAM on an ageing machine or is it better to just throw the towel in and upgrade to something newer and shinier? BTW, I was also having problems with crucial so couldn't get much info from there. How do you even go about getting more RAM, does this involve taking the thing apart?!
 - Just because I love this emoticon!

It depends what you want to use it for, if it's slow now, and wasn't originally, then a windows reinstall will cure it - the rush to upgrade to a new system is rarely necessary unless you are a gamer.

Ram may be an issue, impossible to say without knowing what you have, and which OS. Mcafee will slow it down, there are lighter AV packages out there, avast, avira, kaspersky.

Irishgirl, how you reinstall depends on the system, (most systems have a restore partition nowadays) and whether you have the disks available, have a look in the manual or manufacturers website.
