What operating system are you using? Is it Windows XP or Windows Vista?

Also, how much RAM (memory) do you have?

If XP, run Defrag (if Vista, it should be doing it automatically, but worth checking anyway).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You definitely need more ram. Doubling it to 1 gig will make a hugh difference but id recommend 2 gig or more
Running those programs ive posted will hopefully speed it up some but your still going to be limited by that RAM (In fact im quite shocked you have 0.5 gig on vista)

More ram needed absolutely. Get at least 2gb in there pronto.

I can't believe any laptop manufacturer ever put out Vista with just 512MB! OP, what make/model please?
I recall recommending a Dell Inspiron laptop to someone just after Vista was released. It came with 1GB RAM but was woefully slow out of the box. I got him another 1GB and it transformed it.
Suggest you go to crucial.com and use the system scanner to see what upgrade options you have for your laptop, 2GB (or more if possible) is what you need.

Ive just remembered a mate of mine bought one from pcworld with 512 in it too. What annoyed the hell out of me is they told him that it was one of the fastest laptops they had!
I bumped him upto 1.5 gig for a good spurt in speed

Yeah my wife got a basic laptop with Vista and 1gb ram a few weeks ago and it was dreadful until I upgraded it to 3gb. Fairly flies along now :)
