I would say a better spec-we popped into pc world to actually see some and found 2 we like-both are £449 which i think is prob around what we will spend.

    Packardbell-tj68-au-031 and hp dv6-2010sa.

hp dv6-2010sa - 5% discount if you buy from Currys and apply this code 5D300 This brings it down to £426

Best laptop for the money? It really depends on how you intend to use the laptop, it's reliability, aftersales service and let's not forget...how it looks.

For myself; built in utilities are more important that getting that extra microsecond in processing speed from the laptop.

Whereas for others it may be the Chipset and graphics card.

In my case, I bought the laptop that I needed for £240. There was no point in spending more, as I would not make use of it.

If you feel that you need to spend £450 to get the features that you need... then do so.
What are the features that you need? The HP has some good features such as a LightScribe optical burner and a Firewire input, fast hard disc drive, built in card reader... If you are likely to use these features then spend the extra.

Think about your usage pattern and decide what features are most important to you.
  • the same thing happened to me yesterday with tesco. i have had my laptop for nearly 9 months. i think that tesco deserve some credit for giving a full refund after nearly 12months of use.
I was happy with an exchange for another laptop to the same value safe in the knowledge that if it fails again 11 months down the line they'll refund or exhange it ,no questions asked.

I haven't a clue about features etc on a laptop-we really only use it for the internet, sometimes the odd word doc or excel sheet, the odd game for our son (he is only 3 so you can imagine the types of things) and itunes but other than that i wouldn't imagine we need it for anything else.

In that case, there is really no need to spend £450. You could go with Tesco again for the same reason as archiesdad or pick up one of the Argos return laptops at a low price.

Examples: £274, £295, £311 for a 17" screen(better if it's mainly for home use), £351 17" Screen. Plus choices in between. Really no need to spend more unless that is what you want to do.

But whatever you buy, I would advise either going with one of the inexpensive returns or sticking with Tesco or John Lewis for service.

Mmmm...the spec for this ACER @ £327 is much the same.

The Dell is certainly not overpriced at £350, but there is definitely no £115 saving.
Well yeah it's similar(ish), but the Dell has an extra GB of RAM, and the latest OS with no need to deal with upgrades.

I wasn't saying that the ACER was better; more that the DELL is not £115 better.
