Best laptop to buy

Hi all,i hope this is the right place (please feel free to move.)

I am after some advice about laptops-i bought a acer from tesco almost 12 months ago but it is faulty so they have offered either exchange it (has to be another model as ours isnt made anymore) or a refund....so my question is for around £350 which is the best laptop to buy? We only really use it for excel and word occasionally-its mainly surfing the net....thanks in advance, naomi.xx

Go for a refund (are they offering the full purchase price?). That way you have had a year's free laptop usage and can buy a better model now, as prices continue to fall and specs get better. And you can buy from a proper seller rather than a supermarket.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yeah they are offering the full £349 we paid back-thanks guys i shall have a good look round this weekend.

Have a look at the Dell laptops on their site (please not through PCW).
Suggest you spend another £50 to get a slightly better spec, £350 will get you bottom end processor only.
Existing supermarket stock will be only Vista, not Windows 7.

  • Cheers macman i don't mind adding to it-i'll take a look and show dh later on.

I bought the Sony VA10 last Christmas and there have been no problems except for bits of things that were my fault. My daughter bought me a separate mouse as I did not like the built-in one. It cost £434.00 from John Lewis who give an extra year of guarantee and their delivery is FOC. However, I am impressed with the one my SIL bought which has white keys and seems easier to use. Just realised I am not sure of the make. It might be
a Toshiba. My previous PCs were Dell and both very reliable.

What is this thing about "bottom end processor"? Do you think that they purchased a high end processor a year ago at £350?

This is a moneysaving website; not an "encourage people to spend more than they need" website. ;)

It would be different if the OP expressed a need for more processing power, but that is not the case.

£350 will buy a perfectly respectable laptop.

This processor business on the whole is for geeks and gamers, as most people would not be able to tell the difference anyway.

An example of what is available at that price point from Argos' Return section... that is if you still have confidence in ACER.

Otherwise, there is this 17" Toshiba at £100 off it's normal selling price of £449.
Full specs here. Windows 7 Upgrade for £28.

Decent laptops available from as little as £275.
  • You can get a decent Dell on Special Offer for £349 incl. VAT & Del - Link. Offer is for one week only though...

I know that Dell claim that you are saving £115, but it really is just a £350 laptop.

Well yeah, but it is still good for the money - a £370 Acer has a cosiderably lesser spec than the Dell - not to mention the worse Guarantee and possibly lesser reliablility.
