but getting the retailer to fix it puts the blame where it should be

There is NO blame - in the case of this reply I wholeheartedly echo 27col's post...................

I had the glass doors of a shower cubicle explode suddenly - it was terrifying. I then did some research and was shocked at how often glass structures (windows, tables, doors, glasses) can explode. I got my shower doors replaced on the insurance without a problem: just emailed them a photograph.

I'd say that a cooker should last more than two years and if it doesn't then there is a strong argument that it wasn't manufactured properly and therefore the retailer is liable.

Have you bothered to read the link I posted - these things HAPPEN ! Car windscreens do it, shower panels do it, windows do it - all for a variety of reasons. Maltreatment, incorrect installation or even cause unknown !

"To be quite honest, as with a lot of faults, what is claimed is just ridiculous in many ways and the danger to anyone is massively overstated.

The simple fact is that these doors are made from glass, glass can break and occasionally does so. Should you wish absolute safety then buy an oven with a solid door."

    UPDATE
Just in case this happens to anyone else.
I phoned Candy the manufacturers. They say the parts are covered for 5 years. First I was told an engineer could come out and I would be charged £109 for the visit but repair would be free. Then I was told that in fact there would be no charge for the engineer. So he is booked to come out next week.
Fingers crossed they will agree to repair free of charge.. Glad I kept my bag of bits!
    Cheers everyone.

I looked at the link, it is to a company that repairs ovens so hardly impartial.

They have a vested interest in convincing you to pay them to repair the oven rather than getting the retailer/manufacturer to fix the defective parts for free which Candy have rightfully done in the case of the OP.

Don’t want to be picky but this is a money saving site and surely the advice should be how to enforce sale of goods and/or guarantee rights rather than shrugging shoulders, saying !!!!!! happens and pointing them to a site who will charge them to come out and fix a fault the retailer/manufacturer should be picking up.

And, to Candy for doing the right thing

The oven had been on medium heat and was switched off. I had just taken something out and closed the door (gently) when the outer glass shattered into small fragments ending up as far as 6 foot away! It's a Candy oven fitted by the plumber who got it trade from Magnet a couple of years back. Do you think I have a case against Magnet?

Around two years ago I called New World for a price for an oven door, the oven was out of guarantee by ten months, and said so, I wasn't looking for a freebie... just pricing the door, deciding wether to replace or repair. I said my tenant told me that the door exploded one morning and that the appliance wasn't even switched on, I was asked to hold on....

I was told the door would be replaced in ' three working days' and it would be FREE OF CHARGE, and it was. I reckon they knew there was a problem with some of their doors, albeit... well done NEW WORLD.
  • In the last place I lived (rented) there was a Candy oven, the same thing happened with that, had been used then switched off and about 30 mins later an almighty smash. Ended up claiming on the insurance for it and if i remember corectly it was approx £150 for a new pane of glass fitted (only the outer glass had broke)

It's beginning to sound quite common! Well fingers crossed Candy will be repairing. But if it was to come down to insurance - I've been advised it would have to come out of the buildings insurance not contents as it is built in rather than free standing.
