But if i have a disk that shows x4 and it supports higher, it still only shows x4 in nero, so what do i have to change?

Yes you can! I had a handful of 4x discs and they burnt at 8x. No problems at all!
Not doubting you t4i but I thought that the required burn parameters were actually stored/encoded on the DVD itself .. it dictated at what speed it was designed to operate. Can these actually be over written or have I misunderstood.

The drives firmware determines the available speeds for different media. Try upgrading the firmware if its not the latest version.

indeed, depends what hardware you have. I like to go for lite-ons as they are cheap and have lots of firmware support and crossflashing support.

Pioneer or NEC are the only two brands of DVD burner I'd even consider.

Had a BTC which was based on a Lite-On chipset, NEVER AGAIN and it cost me 3x what a good Pioneer costs now (£100 )

As long as you'll take the beige colour the NEC 4551 is a few quid cheaper on Ebuyer: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/101361

There's also LG drives on Ebuyer even cheaper and with similar reviews (in fact a lot more) - what is the rep of LG drives?
