Taxing a car near the end of the month?

If you SORN a car do you get some kind of notice to display on the vehicle like you would a tax disc?If not, then would they only find out it wasn't SORN'd by running a check on the car, and nosy neighbour had no way to know?
For further information on SORN, look here.0 -

Right- I couldn't see anything about it on the web, just knew it had to be from central office so makes sense since registering would be at the same place!0 -
And bear in mind that any SORN declared by the previous owner does NOT transfer to the new owner - you need to submit a new application (online is possible).0

Well i got my new isurance docs today which i am surpirsed about (i changed the cover on Thursday, and they wanted to charge me a fiver for Special Delivery! - and i won't even go into the £25 admin fee they threw upon me, grrr)
I don't suppose i could nip down to the post office this morning and get tomorrow's disc since it's Sunday tomorrow?!
(probably wishful thinking:rolleyes::D)0 -
Oooh yay, i rang the DVLA who said it is possible for the PO to do this but it's up to them and their screen will try to auto backdate it to pay for Oct but they can change it.
So i rang the PO before making the trip down there who confirmed they can give me the tax disc to start tomorrow :T
This means i can now get son to school on Monday morning without bus stress lol.
One other thing though - i received my insurance docs which say insurance on new car came into effect 29th Oct but i've just checked the askmid database site and it says my new car isn't on there but the old car still is:eek: I only did a free search does it take a while to update? I have my certificate of insurance

What about a garage? Would that be classed as SORN/off road?
No, to be SORN you have to declare SORN to the DVLA.
Then you have to keep it somewhere which qualifies as a keeping place for SORN purposes, and a garage would qualify.0 -
I know, it is off road. I have just bought it tonight!
Thanks i will keep it off road and wait it out, seems silly that i would lose a month considering i need to wait for the actual disc to get here since you have to display the thing  Grr.
You still have to declare SORN to the DVLA for the few days in Oct that you are not on the road. Merely keeping it off road is not enough.
As to the question, you can buy the tax early but it will not be valid until 1st Nov, and I agree that you should buy the tax to be valid from the 1st Nov and keep it off road for the days in Oct, but you should also tell dvla by phone you declare it SORN.0 -

Carry your certificate of insurance & MOT in the car for the first two weeks, and after that you could carry a photocopy.0 -

When insurance companies do this, give them 2 options on the phone, either they cancel the admin charges, and do the transfer for free (except for any extra actual premium). OR you cancel the insurance and take your business elsewhere.
I have NEVER EVER had to accept admin charges by insurance companies, using this method they ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS back down in the end and waive the admin charges. They also ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS go to great lengths to say it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to cancel the admin charges, but somehow they always manage to do it when they realise they are going to lose a customer.0 -
Just to clarify - so if someone was to buy road tax on the 25th september - they would make you pay for all of september and this is where the extra month comes from?
It depends what you ask the post office for, if the car is currently taxed the po computer would say so, and automatically take the new tax from 1st Oct.
If the car has no tax I don't know if they automatically take it from the 1st Sept, but you should ask for the date which you want it to be taken from either 1st of Sept or 1st Oct.0
