Sorry i think you misunderstood me they have the correct details for my account and i have this set up on direct debit and i am fully prepared and expect to pay this . Anyway it now seems i have fallen prey to a scam whereby an account has been fraudulantly taken out in my name on the internet the scammers have then intercepted the delivery of the phone

There's at least one other example of the same scam on these threads. The moral seems to be, if you get a statement that has your name on but different bank details, NEVER assume that it's the mobile operator who's got it wrong. The onus is on you to tell them as soon as you receive it. After all, it's your credit rating that'll get messed up.

Ah I see, I did misunderstand, apologies!

Yes lesson learnt the hard way. ive had the same mobile number for 15 yrs, all my customers know it, god alone knows how much my ignorance might have cost me but im sure weve all been there, another error on thier part we think .my phone is still barred despite faxing proofs of id 4 times even the police fraud squad that i am dealing with say that mobile phone companies are not even police friendly so what chance do i stand?

I don't know about the other networks, but the one I work for has a dept just for dealing with the police.
You have to make sure that the police station you're using is dealing with the right dept and NOT trying to work through customer services (when I worked in CS I didn't know we had this dept)...
Most police fraud squads 'should' know which dept to contact.

Have my other half also received a bill today for a blackberry that has been taken out in the past month, that we have no knowledge of.

I can't believe Orange would be so stupid as to sell a contract phone without any real ID.

Noticed the blackberries phone number in question is at the top of the bill and am very tempted to ring it, see what he has to say for himself, if he answers.

ID is always needed, it a matter of what ID was used and where it was used.
Some dealers will take proofs of ID that they shouldn't, are out of date or just rubbish.

You need to call CS (150) and let them know, they'll call through to the fraud dept and get it sorted for you (it may already have been detected and closed).

Would orange be able to tell or provide information as to what ID they used to get the phone in the first place? It seems only fair they should tell us so we can get this matter cleared up.

I have a feeling our post may have been stolen in the past month or so as I recently recieved a a letter from my bank saying that my debit card was under investigation too.

I'm dreading what else they have up their sleeve.

I'm afriad Orange (or any other network) can't tell you anything.

The networks are bound by the data protection act and can not give any information to you.
I know that sounds wrong, it's your info that's been used, but the way the dpa is run, sorry.
Also, if it was a dealer where the acc was taken out, some of the chains do their own credit check so Orange wouldn't have seen what was shown as ID. . .
  • Is there a possible link with these cases ie details being taken from same place? or contracts taken out at the same place ?

orange gave me the name of the company that supplied the phone/contract, i contacted them and they gave me the name of the courier, i contacted them and they are interviewing the driver to find out how the scammers intercepted the delivery, i also have the last 4 digits of the bank account used and the sort code. you have to dig and prod a bit but they will tell you. Took me a few hours on the phone but dont give up
after all its your identity at stake. i have forwarded all info to the fraud sqaud and await a response. Orange have now lifted the unnecessary bar on my phone but have not contacted me at all. Not very good customer relations. seems they dont give a **** Well maybee once this does the rounds on the internet they may reconsider there id checking policies and that of thier retailers In my opinion its not hard to stop this scam
