just wanted to say thanks to all that helped on this situation/problem, and also special thanks to jonathan from the orange response team for putting my mind at rest by confirming its all sorted.
has made me even more cautious than normal now tho! and it seems silly to say this, but im kinda waiting for the next letter to come along from another company saying i/he has opened up something we dont know about!
does anyone know if there is anything i can do to notify people that this has happened, ie, maybe something on my credit report?0 -
Best to keep things to yourself and make yourself more aware of disposing of letters and other private information - always shred paperwork properly before throwing away.
I always tear up paperwork into bits, especially the bits containing addresses, sort codes, account codes etc. Always dispose of credit cards properly by cutting up etc.
You could opt to change bank (at least your main current account) and move any direct debits away from the compromised account. Worth talking to your existing bank perhaps first.0 -
There are services u can sign upto that notify you have credit report changes, and other attempts to add to your credit report.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -

Nice to see you've got it sorted.
You can ask for a password to be added to your credit file, the company doing the credit check is suppoed to look for it and ask you for it. In practise, from my experience, no ever checks that there is one!
As Oneaday says below, destroy any paper work with any kind of personal info on it (or file it safely if you need to keep it).
I deal with people who tell me they just bin their bank statements, credit card bills and the like but who then can't understand how anyone has managed to open half a dozen mobile phone acc's in their name !!!0 -
There have been a number of similar instances I have been made aware of recently. It looks like this is the latest scam operated by ID thieves. There is a website that offers advice on what to do if you think your ID may have been stolen -
Unfortunately as I am a new user this forum won't allow posting of links but the website is stop-idfraud.co.uk and look up advice for victims of ID theft.
Further advice also available through CIFAS - again can't post the link but got to cifas.org.
In a number of cases the ID thieves have actually stolen post before it is delivered (probably to get around the fact that more people are now shredding important documents). Make sure you keep alert to this possibility, if you normally expect your bank/credit card statements at particular times then make sure they have arrived, same with utility bills etc. This is difficult at the moment because of Royal Mail strikes and fraudsters may well play on this so even more reason to be vigilent. Consider moving to paperless billing.
Hope this helps.0 -
I have a similar problem, About a month ago i changed my phone provider from 3 to orange, ported my existing number over all great. received a letter about a week ago to confirm bank details which contained my address but wrong bank details . My wife pointed this out me but i said oh well let them sort it out as they must have made a mistake with the banking details (BIG MISTAKE BY ME). This monday morning my phone was barred . I was at work with no means of contacting orange. losing money by the hour so went home used another orange phone to contact them to be given sketchy deatails about them not being able to verify who i am and could i take proofs of identity to an orange shop to be faxed to them.
Itook said docs to orange beckton and the salesgirl hand wrote a cover sheet and faxed them over. phoned orange 24hrs later and they denied receiving them and suggested i faxed them again after a very long and irrate conversation i got some more info out of them.apparently another contract has been taken out in my name and has been making long calls to nigeria i then agreed to fax details again to a second number which would you believe it did not work so i faxed them to original number. waited another 24hrs phoned them only to be told they still hadnt received them.Told orange this wasnt good enough and i wanted my pack code as i wanted to cancel my contract and go elsewhere i was told this was not possible until phone was un barred so here we are 3 days on and through no fault of my own i have no mobile phone, lost so much time and money. orange have given me the details of where the account was taken out and after contacting them i have contacted the police and await a crime number so we can track the courrier firm that delivered the phone Orange need to deal with this problem more effectivly or they will not atract many new customers0 -

Sorry but you knew from the off that they didn't have the correct bank details yet you chose not to let them know, and to carry on using the phone, and you somehow think you are the wronged party here?
The onus was entirely on you to correct the error, or did you hope that you could get away with using the phone and not paying?0 -

Sorry i think you misunderstood me they have the correct details for my account and i have this set up on direct debit and i am fully prepared and expect to pay this . Anyway it now seems i have fallen prey to a scam whereby an account has been fraudulantly taken out in my name on the internet the scammers have then intercepted the delivery of the phone0
