M8 to Glasgow

Hello!

I will be using the M8 from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Leaving at around 9am. Is there heavy traffic at that time on a weekday? I have to be punctual. So, usually is it a smooth one hour drive?

From Edinburgh to Glasgow I'd leave well before an hour. It takes me an hour for a normal half hour journey, so I'd leave 2 hours before to be safe.

it depends on what area of glasgow your heading to i suppose, the east end wont be too bad but if your heading over the kingston bridge then leave yourself plenty of time, especially at the moment.
some mornings its not too bad and your kept moving, other mornings one tiny little bump, even on the other side of the motorway (rubber neckers) can cause delays.
if your leaving edinburgh at 9am you should miss most of the traffic by the time you get to glasgow.
if it were me i would be giving myself 2 hours to be on the safe side.

Agreed, it can be a nightmare. I'd leave with lots of time to spare and stop off for a coffee after I'd parked the car. Problem solved.:D

  • I would get the train quarter the time and less hassle.

I agree you will miss most of the traffic IF you leave at 9am. Leave before that and you will probably get caught up in it.

But leave at 8am and it will probably take you at least 90 minutes.

You are going to have try it at different times if you are going to do it regularly. What time do you have to be in Glasgow?

Would be better saying when and where you have to be!

agian that depends where they are going. i would agre if it was straight in and out of the city centre to city centre but it would mean more hassle if there were connecting trains at either end required.

my top tip for the M8 though, between edinburgh and bailliston use the left hand lane, it might not seem it but it always moves much quicker at a steady pace. compared to the right hand lane with folk constantly braking and stopping for no reason.
then after ballieston use which ever lane moves the quickest. when you hit the traffic again at stepps always use the left lane again,it always moves much quicker as everyone is exiting and not many folk entering the M8 at this point.

    Very informative, thanks. More information:

I'm going to Glasgow Airport, want to be there around 11am so that I have lots of time to check in and have a coffee. Flight is in a few hours time.

Leave Edinburgh at 9am, would get me there for 11am - that was my plan. As, leaving an hour earlier means i would probably spend the extra hour on traffic.

Leaving Edinburgh at 0800 and getting to Glasgow airport by 1000 is only £12.70 one way.. couple of changes but better than sitting in traffic maybe.

Is that by train and then bus?

then they need to get to the airport. im sure there is a regular shuttle bus from the city centre but personally i would take the car rather than mess about changing from trains to buses.
it would cost about £25 from the city centre in a taxi to the airport.

now if the government hadnt gone back on thier word about the airport rail link, this could be a different story. why do they always think green until it cost some serious money?
