I'd use a Linux Live CD and a Web-Based Proxy...

  • Are you taking advice from www.womensaid.org.uk ?

If not then please do. They will give you safety tips if you are not ready/too scared to leave.

Please seek help. From your username i assume you have children too, are they safe? If not then please please contact Womens Aid

    Good luck

I appreciate that you are asking in the Techie Forum for advice about your computer, but I really do think it is the very least of your problems and there are other things you should be concentrating on.

If he is a good systems developer then 99% of what people suggest on this forum would be able to found out by him if he put the effort in, so please don't think you are 'safe' by following advice on here.

See the post above mine for a good starting point. Go check it out at the library or a friends if you can?

    Good luck.
  • I would get in contact with someone about this .You being safe is more important than a computer. Use a friends, work or public computer and get out and go and stay with a friend. if you are that scared tell the police, they may help you by putting you in touch with people that can help. If you have children then they need to be safe too. Edit your posts on here too, they may give too much away.

IF you have a flash drive use this http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
    Features

firefox_portable_small.pngMozilla Firefox is a fast, full-featured web browser that's easy to use. It has lots of great features including popup-blocking, tabbed-browsing, integrated search, improved privacy features, automatic updating and more. Plus, thanks to the PortableApps.com launcher bundled in the Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition, it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on, so you can take your favorite browser along with all your favorite bookmarks and extensions with you wherever you go.
From the forum on that site :-

    1. Privacy: Does Firefox Portable leave behind any personal data?

      A. No. Firefox Portable has its disk cache disabled. It uses RAM for cache. All your cookies and other data is self-contained on your portable device. At no time is any personal data stored on the local machine, so even if someone tried to find it with an undelete utility, there would be nothing for them to find.
There is also a prtable MSN etc and even skype.

I hope things improve for you.

It may leave no personal info on the PC BUT it will still leave logs on the router / smoothwall etc.

    mummy26,
If you have too, then go down the library computer.
Just talk girlie drivel on comps you have dual access to. Playing the "Stepford Wife" ain't dumb, just smart.

You got support here I believe.
Time to plan your exit methinks.

    Stay strong.

If you go into Tools, then internet options right at the top of the page, then into general you can then check the box that says delete browsing history on exit you can hit the delete button which will delete cookies, passwords and all the stuff you would rather he not know about. Now its probably not as good as C Cleaner but its another step. It means having to keep inputting your passwords and stuff though.

My only thought is though that if he goes through your computer he will see what you have ticked so you might think it wise not to leave the save history bit ticked.

Also, be careful what favourites you have stored. Also you can go into programmes, accessories, system tools and disc cleanup thats another way you can delete stuff. They probably do the same thing but its better to be safe than sorry.

Hope all goes well for you xxx

The OP's husband is a systems developer. This advice is totally useless I'm afraid. He knows exactly what he is doing!

OP - once again, please get professional advice and use a computer which he does not have access to. Please also ignore advice such as this, it could just make problems a lot lot worse. No disrespect meant Judi.

On a subject as delicate as this i am happy to be corrected. I just worry that her husband gets agitated when she uses C Cleaner.

Indeed - but if she switches method of trying to erase her tracks, he will definitely know she is trying to hide something which could lead to bigger problems - this is why I can't stress strongly enough that the OP needs to use a different computer to do this research.

    Hope you understand :)
