Yep, cashback is a nice little earner for a dishonest checkout operator too, how many times have you had to ASK for your money after the cash drawer has been closed due to the absent mindedness of the c/o. Yes I know it's easy to do, but I also know it's easy to do.Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0

If there were 3 £50s in the till then there should be a record of when they were taken as they are unlikely to be part of the float and the amount tendered should be entered by the cashier.
Whether the till balances is no indication of whether you were short changed or not as it is possible for a dishonest cashier to shortchange several customers and then give too much to a "friend"

its unreasonable to expect them to close the till
wait and see what they come back to you with
if they say the tills right then you would need to escalate your complaint
It's unreasonable for Tesco to unlawfully take £30 off you. It's worse that they tell you to wait until it is convenient for them. The issue should have been resolved immediately, and I would have refused to leave the shop and insisted on calling the police if this happened to me.
I understand that people must try to scam Tesco all the time, and this must be tiresome for them to deal with, but it is simply the nature of their business and they must be prepared to deal with it. Leaving the till open allows the possibility of further transactional errors and is likely to make it more difficult to ascertain what the customer paid.0 -
Also in the case of a dishonest cashier providing time and opportunity to cover their tracks be either secreting cash or returning it to the cash drawer to be located later.
If the situation had been reversed and the op decided to remove produce from the store over which there was dispute as to whether or not payment had been made, you can be sure the police would have been called and a much more dutiful and diligent response from supervisory staff displayed.
Have you had a response from them yet op?Four guns yet only one trigger prepare for a volley.Together we can make a difference.0 -

I work on checkout I've only had two people complain about my change and both time my floats tallied up exactly people try it on more often than you think sometimes it a genuine error on there behave. But I would side with the OP is not trying it on.
I would suspect that the operator will get a disciplinary if there was significant difference between what should be in there and was actually in there and if there criminal charges they made be unable to comment.0 -

Again, I think this would be unacceptable. I understand the practicalities concerned, but I would be livid if a supermarket short-changed me by £30 and then made me wait for hours as a result of their incompetence.
I would have insisted on being given the £30 there and then or possibly would have negotiated an amicable settlement. Maybe I would have offered to leave the matter with them while they investigate so long as they double the payment to me when the error is found, with the full understanding that the police will be called if they claim the correct change was given.0 -

Hopefully (although I doubt it) you will now get an apology from those on this board who suggested that you are a fraudster....0 -
