When myself and OH get a place of our own we want to save up some of the deposit but I know my parents will help us out as well although we would have to pay them back, which I guess makes a bit of a difference. I would still not buy somewhere without their guidance though as I know that they know more about property than me.
Dinah I know you are quite knowledgable on property so this is a bit different for you. Hope that the e-mail goes well. I think you just need to get NIMs Dad to know how much you know etc to make him have confidence in your decisions. Good luck!0 -
Sounds like you've got it all under control now Dinah! I think the email is a great idea, hope it goes well! I'm sure once NIMs Dad knows how screwed on your head is property wise he'll relax a bit - he might think with how fast things are progressing you haven't considered everything. But then he should know with Dinah everything comes bullet pointed with spread sheets! (And I say this in the most loving way I promise

Not really, this house is a good deal, we have the option to add a lot of value to it by doing it up, and I'm not willing to give up on it just yet. In addition its not only the £26k deposit we're talking about, we could be on about at least double that, so I can understand him trying to take care of us. Thats not to say it doesn't irk me I don't have full control, but NIM believes if we make a good case to show him we're not rushing in blind and we are capable, then it doesn't hurt for him to feel we're financially competant.Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Exactly - I think he might be worried about the speed of things rather than anything else?
Having said that, he also needs to make it clear whether you are getting the money (gift) or not. At least you can move forward if he feels it isn't the right time to buy.Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

Yeah I want to do a repairs spreadsheet to attach, but I don't really know how to cost quite a lot of the items! Felting a flat roof, a kitchen extension, a rewire, putting in a new central heating system and an oil tank, how do I price these?!?!?!Debt January 1st 2018 £96,999.81Met NIM 23/06/2008

Can you google them and get rough costs? I know wouldn't be very exact.0

I would ring a builder (do you know of any) and ask for a general quote on a house that size. You might as well do the budget properly so that you have a realistic one.Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947

So annoyed - I just wrote a long post and lost it!
Anyways, was going to say that you could try asking on DIY/house board as they're much friendlier that house buying/mortgage peeps, promise!

Great idea about the email. And I was also going to suggest posting it up on here for an estimate. How'd you get on with that? The 1,000 Day Challenge:Feb 16, 2016500/30,000
