How PAC works?

I like to move from Vodafone to O2. I understand that I need to get PAC from Vodafone and inform it to O2.
But how the migration happens? Shall I be without a phone number for sometime? Or suddenly I shall see my screen changes from Vodafone to O2?
Will O2 give me a new SIM or I shall continue to use my old SIM?

:o

    Process is.

    1. Request a PAC code from Vodafone. (Last 20 days of contract)
    2. Once you have your PAC Code, order from O2 and tell them you want to transfer your number, (they may ask you to ring again when the phone arrives)
    3. Once that PAC transfer is completed (2-3 working days), your number from your old sim is now on your new sim. And your old contract will now have finished. So doesn't transfer too soon, time the transfer when your old contract is due to end.

Get the pac code from Voda, give it to O2.

3 days later the Voda sim stops working and within a few hours you'll get sim updates to the O2 sim which will programme it with your old number. Switch off the phone and back on again and you're sorted.

There can be a gap between the old sim shutting down and the new sim getting the old number, but the temp number on the new sim should still work until the port completes.
  • Sorry to hijack the thread but say you are out of contract, can you get your pac code, mode to say a PAYG sim. Once done, then get a pac code from that carrier and move back to old carrier to save having to occur upgrade fees on new devcices?

PAC is applicable only when you change carrier. From contract to PAYG under same carrier has no meaning.

Yes, that's the way to get a 'new customer deal'. Move to payg on another network and then back again.

Ask for your pac code from the network you on. Get a payg sim for another network (loads free on the net).

Activate the payg sim, call CS for that network and tell them you want to move your number. Give them the pac code.

After 3 days the number moves over to the new sim.

Find a contract you like and start it, when you're sure you like it, ask for the pac code for the payg sim.

Give the the pac code to the new contract network, after 3 day the number moves to the contract. Done.

One thing to remember. Voda ONLY let you move a number in right at the start of a contact when you sign up. All the other networks will let you port in at any time.

I got my PAC from Vodafone (they didn't even bother to match O2 deal!)

Spoken with O2. They will issue me a new SIM. Then when I give them my PAC, within 2 working days, my SIM will be converted to show my old number :)

    Let's see how it goes.
