Freezing and Defrosting fruit?
Comments

The high water content of most fruit means that the freezing process causes it to go soft when defrosted.
It doesn't affect the flavour, just the texture, so normally only useful for smoothies, granitas etc.
I quite often blitz it up with low fat greek yoghurt to make a creamy tasting, low calorie 'ice cream'.0 -
Hi
At our local farmshop they have lots of fruit at very good prices per bag, DH always seems to think that their fruit doesn't last as long as the supermarket, I was wondering what fruits can be frozen?
I'm more of a veggie gal but ds and dh love to eat - Satsuma's/Oranges. Apples and Pears. Bananas, Grapes, Strawberries, Plums, Nectarines - Which ones are the best to freeze and how do you freeze them (cut up? whole? peeled?)
Thanking you in advance x:j Mortgage Free!! )Generally trying to cut back where possible :j0 -

As they have a high water content, a lot of fruits freeze well, but become mushy when defrosted.
I like to freeze fruit to use in smoothies, cooking and to eat with yogurt. I peel and chop, then open freeze.
The best fruits are berries, grapes, plums, nectarines.
Bananas tend to turn brown and unapetising (for me at least
). :rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -

I have bought a melon and pineapple weekly, I normally cut it up and store in the fridge in a lunch box, but find that after 3 days or so the quality is not great.
What is the best way to store these to ensure maximum quality after a few days.Total 19-02-2017 £39,711.37 - Total: 02-04-2017 £38,733.47 (Paid back - 2.46%)

I store mine in an airtight tub in the fridge, they do tend to have to be used pretty quickly else they lose the sort of freshness/crunch, sorry no help at all.Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011

The pineapple will freeze well the melon wont though best way I have found to store melon is with these bags http://www.lakeland.co.uk/1094/20-Stayfresh-Longer-Bags-25-x-38cm they are expensive but can be washed and reused - please ignore first review on the website and read the rest.
remove the seeds from the melon - if you can buy 2 smaller melons like galia on offer - the uncut one will keep longer.
If you find they still dont keep try swapping for kiwi or mango - find these keep longer than melon

I can easily keep a pineapple for a week. Don't cut it all up at once - cut off a wedge every day you need a bit. If the side of it starts to dry out a bit/go a bit funny, you can trim that bit off and the rest of it is usually absolutely fine.
I keep it wrapped in cling film in the fridge. Can't help you with melon though, I hate the stuff.
I find pineapple is quite a good way of buying fruit - a large one can be had for £1 or so, and goes quite far.0 -
I freeze both although I don't defrost them just whizz them up and make a cold smoothie.Credit Card: £796 Left/£900 October 2011 :eek:Store Card: £100 October 2011
