EasyJet - Hand luggage too big at the gate?

  • Common sense says you should be alright, but will more often than not depend on the person at the airport and if they're ina good mood or not.

I flew to Nice with Easyjet a month ago and always carry my camera equipment in a rucksack as hand luggage (don't want it getting damaged). I was asked to put it into the size test and it didn't fit, however I was able to empty everything from the front pockets of the bag into my jacket pockets and it just managed to squeeze in with a big push.. so I got the ok for it.

Last night I was on a BMI Baby flight from Cardiff and they were checking everyone in the line for the gate, but I didn't have my jacket with me (had it in my checked in bag) so was prepared for them to get it checked in, however showed my passport and walked right through.

Mostly down to luck, but I would be surprised if you have a problem.

Flew LTN-GLA yesterday with easyjet. Checked in online and printed own boarding pass hence went straight to security and on to the gate. At no point was my hand luggage checked by any easyjet staff for it's size. It's perfectly within the dimensions, but went unchecked.

Which is probably why it went unchecked?

I doubt a money saving time saving airline are in the habit of checking bags which look to be the right size.

I'm going to play it by ear. If the worse thing that can happen is I pay £16 and it goes in the hold, then I'll take a chance.

It does go on the flight with me if they take it away at the gate though, doesn't it? I don't want to arrive in Rome with only what I'm standing up in! :O

Thought I would update this thread.

Just returned from my trip to Rome with easyJet. My bag (55 x 35 x 24) slipped nicely into the cage at check in at LGW so I was relieved. When I got to the gate, the easyJet woman said to me "Please put your bag into the cage.... sideways"!! I was a bit surprised, as none of the cages say anything about going in sideways.. Anyway, it went in OK, but I had a right old job getting it out again.

Coming home, my bag wasn't measured.

I'd say that the depth measurement is definitely bigger than 20cm by a few cms.

  • Hi pimento, I have a suitcase that's also 23cm in depth but it's a hard case one. It's also smaller in the other dimensions. Shall I not risk taking that? Would that definitely not fit? Thanks. :)

Well the bottom of my case (where there's a wheel on each corner) is rigid, so measures 24cm x 35cm so it might just fit.

are you flying Easyjet or Ryanair?

I noticed your post on the Ryanair thread re your concerns about your hand luggage, which seemed to indicate that you were flying with Ryanair.

You need to comply with whichever airline you're travelling with - there's no guarantee that Ryanair and Easyjet cages will be the same.
