OS Daily Thread - SUNDAY 25th October

Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Sunday 25th October. It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning OS friends,(it says 0400 but my head says 0500)

My song for today is HERE. The singer is Sarah McLachlan, best known for 'Arms of an Angel'.
welcome2.gifSouk - great to have you with us.
mlnc - How lovely to be able to buy such fresh veg so close to home
taplady - thankyou.gif That was a lovely thing to say and I am keeping it to make me smile for a while!!smile_tongue.gif
Momoftwo - well done for not smoking for a whole year, that is fab
celyn - I would be cross too if my OH ate all six croissants - I mean, how inconsiderate!

The tescos order arrived yesterday and with it a sneaky Turkey that I just had to order because I adore roast turkey and it was half price. Not cheap - but worth it. He is defrosting in the kitchen now so we will be able to cook him on Monday. They also had turkey crowns on offer so we are going to weigh all the breast meat we got off this one just to compare. I am aware we get all the brown meat too which is why I went for the whole bird but I only eat the breast so am curious.

My OS-iness today will be sorting out my craft corner and trying to decant several boxes into several less boxes. Plus we will have a roast pork dinner. Would like to spend some time in the garden, weather permitting, as my father is down visiting this week for the first time in about 5 yrs and I would like it a little tidier. Am nervous enough about him seeing me. If I focus on the garden it will help.

Roast pork for dinner I think and we have to go pick up a steamer we won on freecycle as our old one is a bit dodgy.
I hope everyone has a relaxed and enjoyable Sunday. With love, light and HSarmhugs_9780.giffor everyone who would like one.

Good morning MSD, and all who follow.

Diva - good luck with your Dad's visit - five years is a long time!

Jayne and George - (((((hugs))))))

RedRuby - haven't been on here every day but I gather your house move is imminent? Good luck with it all and I hope you'll be very happy in your new home!

Welcome to all the newbies. I hope you enjoy it on this thread! I don't seem to be able to post every day (life just gets in the way sometimes!), but the people on here are a great bunch!

Yesterday, we were hobnobbing with the Mairie of our nearest town, having been invited as 'new arrivals'. There were about a dozen of us altogether, some French, some English. We had a lovely afternoon, with coffee and cakes to start, then a guided tour of the medieval part of the town (in the pouring rain, but it was so interesting that bit didn't matter!), then back to the Mairie's offices for aperitifs and more cake. DH and I were singled out by the local newspaper reporter and interviewed and photographed and will, apparently, be in a forthcoming edition of Nouvelle Republique - heaven knows what I'll look like, the photo was taken after we'd been out in the rain and the umbrella didn't keep me that dry! Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and everyone left with some roses, a bag of local apples (delicious) and a cake, all locally produced. It was great to be invited and we found that there is a lot going on here to help newbies to the area settle in.

Well, dinner today is roast beef (well, the French don't call us Brits 'rosbifs' for nothing!). The joint was on special and looks really good - I'm looking forward to it already!

DH's finger is recovering really well from his mini-op last week, and he's managing to get quite a bit done to the house, though we've not yet taken down the ceiling that he's been threatening to do for a few weeks. I think that will be towards the end of this week. We have between us managed to plasterboard another ceiling and made the holes ready for downlights - that room will be my study/office/craft/present-wrapping room!

Well, hope you all remembered to put the clocks back - not looking forward to the evenings drawing in even earlier though!

Hope you all have a lovely Sunday.

• Hi Mioliere, lovely to see you posting. I love hearing about your life in France. Yes, 5 yrs is a long time but my father moved to Yorkshire about 6 yrs ago from Derby and I haven't been able to travel that far due to health restrictions etc and my father hasn't needed to come down here as all his family either go to visit him or he and they meet up half way. I do talk to him at least once a month though and often twice.

Morning. I hate it when the clocks go back, takes me ages to not wake up even earlier than I did before.
Got the MAC computer, at the moment I can't find anything and keep on saying to myself Windows does this and that..... I have a few weeks trial so we shall how well we get on. This has some very good programs on it from his office stash that would cost 1000's and a large 19 inch flat screen, but whether I am too old to get used to it? How do I type a letter?

Looks to be a sunny but windy day. Roast chicken for dinner and hopefully my uncle is coming over to join us.
Have a good weekend

Hola!
Another one here who hates the clock change :mad:and thinks we should be on Summer Time all year.:D

re the Apple I have used both in the past and would not knock an Apple, but for ease of use by years of practice I stick to an PC, even though my one "knack" is to pick up any computer programs and remember how to use without a problem, but if you have to use a PC at work and an Apple at home then it can be a PITA. Anyway should you be using "office stash" software;).
MSD & M - Morning Ladies, just enjoy seeing your Dad MSD and don't worry he will have aged too! Glad you had a nice time with the Mayor, and the village is making you welcome.

Welcome Newbies - sorry not as good as MSD at writing things down :obut :hello:

 to the rest of you, as well as the clocks going back also the heat got to me overnight, it didn't go below 20 outside, I know you want to kill me, but for those thinking of a cheap break for the half term, the weather around Alicante is set to be fine for next week, however, just sit down before you read further as I am posting a recipe out of a free paper over here, and my adaptation.

Albondigas (Meatball) Soup
(Courtesey of Paul Mutter from Coastrider – a free weekly paper out here)
Ingredients (enough for 6 people he claims)
2 tbspn Olive Oil
1 large Onion, chopped
2 cloves Garlic, minced
4 Pints Chicken or Beef stock
2 tbspn Tomato Frito
1 Small can of chopped Tomatoes
200g green beans in 1” pieces
2 lg Carrots – peeled & sliced
100g rice
1lb ground beef
4 level tbspn fresh chopped min (I used 4 tspn dried)
4 level tbspn finely chopped parsley (I used 4 tspn dried
1 beaten egg
1 tspn salt
¼ spn Black Pepper
Dried cayenne or chopped chillies to taste – be careful (Optional)
200g frozen peas or sweet corn
1 tspn Oregano
Sale & Pepper
4 level tbspn chopped fresh coriander

Take a large saucepan and put the oil in. Heat over medium flame and when hot add the onion. Cook and stir until onion is softened, add carrots and the beans and cook for several minutes stirring to avoid burning, now add the minced garlic and stir to mix the flavours and cook for 2 mins. Add the tin of tomatoes and again stir carefully t incorporate and cook for 2 mins. Now add the stock and the tomato frito and carefully bring to the boil. Cover the pan and let simmer for 20 mins. or so.
Make the meatballs
In a bowl mix the rice, minced beef, chopped parsley and mint together, add the beaten egg and mix thoroughly. Make 1” dia. balls, either just by hand or using a spoon to help, place in simmering soup and allow to cook for 30 mins.
Ten minutes before the end add the peas and/or sweet corn, the dried Oregano, optional cayenne or chilli powder and taste for seasoning.
Take the meatballs out carefully first and place into bowls before adding the vegetable stock. Sprinkle with chopped fresh coriander.

I made these meatballs in a thick tomato and vegetable sauce for just 4 of us and served with penne pasta, here is my lazy version. Take a couple of beef stock cubes and chop up with a spoon in the bottom of a mw proof jug, add a packet of tomato frito and bring to the boil in the mw,, stir well and add to the SC. Take some frozen mixed veg and bring to the boil in a saucepan so they are no longer frozen and then drain and add to the SC (onions and garlic not used at this house so add these if you want them) I didn’t have a tin of chopped toms in but would warm and add them next time, add some chopped fresh peppers, mushrooms, celery and any other veg. hanging about in the fridge which need using up chopped into small pieces. Add various herbs and spices to your own taste but no salt as enough in stock cubes. Put the lid on the SC and forget until about an hour before you want to eat, checking flavour and adding extra herbs and spices as you wish. Those wishing to make go further or fussy kids hubbies, could blend the sauce once cooked or even add some lentils to make the sauce thicker and more filling, and then add the chopped toms.
Make the meatballs I had no fresh herbs here so used dried but tspn fulls not tbspn fulls and they were very tasty and enjoyed by all. Throw into the SC and leave for 30-60 mins (I left mine 60 as we got talking). Cook the penne, place into bowls and add the sauce and meatballs on top. Serve

DH liked it so much I have to make it again, but asked for more sauce this time:T You will have to excuse the method, as out here do not have ready made stock, etc., available out of the freezer, and far too warm to spend much time in the kitchen most of the time.

Did anyone else catch the ITV program on Statins and Muscle and Feet pain? Makes you think.

Time for another coffee me thinks.

:grouphug: Cranky, Smoky, P-Pin if you are reading, Redruby's DD, Jackie - hope the joints are easing, and anyone else who'd like one :grouphug:

Celyn - buy only things you like and he doesn't, put food where he will not think to look for it, do only your own washing and ironing, and ignore the house for a while, either that or tell him he has to pay for a cleaner! You are a OH and not a slave. (me being stroppy again).

Morning everyone.
Not only have I not had the extra hour in bed I've managed to lose a couple more in the night thanks to DS. He decided a nocturnal visit was in order around 1am and then mucked about for 2 hours (with many threats from me). Despite DD having a late night she still woke at her normal time of 6am now to be 5am. This changing hours really messes about with the kids (and of course therefore me) - and what for? A couple of weeks extra grace from the dark mornings?
Was going to take DS swimming but he's woke up full of my cold :o so I think that's going to be a no no. Think perhaps a visit to the park might be in order if it stays dry.
Tea tonight will no doubt be chicken and veg.
Might do some baking if I get the chance.
Not read yesterdays thread so will head off and have a nose.

mioliere - sounds like they are treating you very well in your village/town. Sound idyllic :D
Donny-gal - receipe sounds delish thanks for that :)

Hugs to those that need them.
Have a good Sunday OS or not.

Edited to add:

Diva - enjoy your dad visiting

Ivyleaf - hope you're reading this - the quote in my sig is from metaphysical poet Andrew Marvell and it's the last lines from his poem To his Coy Mistress
Link http://www.luminarium.org/sevenlit/marvell/coy.htm should you be interested in reading the whole thing. Did all the metaphysical poets (yes there are more of them!) during my English Lit A Level. Some of the stuff is pretty heavy going but this is one I like.

Good Morning,
A lovely day today. Doggies revving up for a walk. Slept really well last night as DS1 at all night party and did not wake me up at 4am. feel sorry for party neighbours though!! Thats the first time in months that i have not been woken up by him!!

OS - well I have a gammon joint that needs to go in. Hoping to do roasties and cauliflower cheese with it. Must get ironing finished and sort out generally. I have an a work appointment tomorrow and am really not looking forward to it as its the first since I wrote my very difficult letter of complaint last week. Im dreading it in fact but not gonna let it spoil my day today. Kids dad taking me to large garden centre later to look at decorations which Im really looking forward to.

hope everyone has a lovely sunday,
Mollyx

Morning All

MSD - enjoy your Dad's visit.

Havnt noticed the extra hour at the moment but I will tonight when it will be dark so early. Everyone is up today (apart from DD) so no peace and quiet for me.

Just about to jump in the shower, put a wash on & start the ironing. Will be making scrambled eggs and bacon for lunch, roast chicken for dinner. Didnt get any baking done yesterday as spent a large amount of time on the laptop - mainly on MSE looking at crafty things.

If it stays dry here will take the dog for a walk somewhere nice, the kids can come if they promise not to moan the whole way

Must must must dig my SAD lamp out today, am certainly feeling a bit lower than normal - dont know if it is SAD or all the rubbish going on at work, money etc.......

Anyway, best get off now, have a great day whatever you are doing. (((hugs))) wherever needed.

Morning all,

Lovely bright beautiful day here, OH has gone to the boot sale, and dd is still in bed, so peaceful here, dd is definitely on the mend, so not swine flu which is good news :T

Today we will be doing the shed, taking everything out, making three piles, one for charity shop, one for keeping and one for the tip, OH keeps saying that we have plenty of time and whats the rush :mad:, Kathy we may be moving in 5 weeks, :T, so need to start getting organised.

Roast lamb for dinner today, I think dd is off out with her dad for a while, so will do dinner for late afternoon.

I have our bedding in the wm, so will get that out, and I will get dd to strip hers, need to make the most of the good drying day.

Diva, so glad your dad is coming, will this help to build bridges with your mum ?

Kathy your day yesterday sounds lovley x

Donny, the recipe sounds great x

Souk, welcome xx

Morning, everyone! Caffeine is the only thing keeping me awake at the moment. Up early for a Sunday and headed off swimming in a mo - got to love those last minute changes to plans. Then back home to cook for people, and then lots of lovely ironing. It'll be nice to get back to work for a rest!

That recipe does sound lovely. I've made a note and will definitely be trying that one at some point. The pizzas I made turned out lovely again last night and have converted a friend to the joys of making from scratch rather than buying them and I did spend a nice few hours chatting. I'm roasting a chicken and doing roast potatoes today with all the trimmings so there'll be lots of leftovers for me to turn into various bits and bobs for future meals. Yay!

In all, I'm feeling rather down today. No doubt it'll change eventually but for now I'll try not to dwell on things.

Might take some of the crumbles out for dessert or just leave it. Both of us are on a health kick again (hence the swimming) and I can plead tiredness there, at least. Have a good day everyone

Kitchenbunny xx
