How Microsoft managed to mess up win 7.

Well, as you could expect, something just had to go wrong....

I bought windows 7 professional 64-bit through the student offer, and had a massive headache trying to figure out how to make it work. but i managed it and seeing theres not a huge amount of help out there i thought id make a post with what to do.

Ok so you get your email, follow the link download the file and you get 3 files. one .exe and 2 files called box1 and box2, no .iso:eek:.

so you click on the .exe and it opens a loading window that says opening box etc etc (some kind of unzipper) but, you get to the end and get an error message saying something along the lines of cannot complete process due to permission. this situation occurs in both xp and vista 32-bit os' when upgrading to windows 7 64-bit, heres how to get around it. now when you click that .exe it attempts to create a folder called expanded setup that it will then boot up but as i said this is inturrupted with the error.

However all is not lost, if you look, you will notcie this expanded setup folder still appears (try do do all this on your desktop to simplify stuff), and that the folders sze is 3.01GB. Thhis is what you will use to create a bootable .iso.

FIRST STEP: Download osgdimg and extract it to C:\Windows\system32.

SECOND STEP: Assuming that the expanded setup folder is on your desktop, do the following:

VISTA USERS: type cmd in the start bar, right click, run as administrator and then copy and paste this is

Oscdimg.exe –u2 –b"C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" –h "C:\Users\your_username\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

(make sure to put your own username in the two parts of the command) then hit enter

XP USERS: go to start menu, run, type cmd, hit enter.

i havnt tested this myself but apparently you need to paste this first

cd /d C:\windows\system32

and then this

oscdimg -u2 -b"C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup\boot\etfsboot.com" -h "C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\expandedSetup" C:\7.iso

(again replacing USER with your username)

And voila, a bootable .iso on your desktop to burn to a dvd through img burn or something.

Hope this helped somebody

it took me a bit of searching the net to find a command line that actually worked, and to actually figure out what was wrong in the first place.

Shame on you MS!

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Hasn't this got more to do with how a content publisher decided to distribute it rather than Microsoft?

i wouldnt of thought so, surly MS just give digital river the files and say here you go distribute them through your servers,

i doubt digital river had any input as to what the files where

i may be wrong but either way you would of thought MS would have done something about it

    looking on this site http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/Help/Help-with-your-download?&err=t3#at3

looks like its not an iso

    Installing your download

To install your download go to where you saved it with the Microsoft Store Download Manager. Double-click on the compressed / Zip file and select the location that you would like to unzip the files to (for example ‘My Documents > Microsoft Store Downloads’). Once the file/s are unzipped double click on the “set-up” file to start the installation.

Follow the installation steps for your download. When you are prompted for your license key please enter the key contained in your order.

IMPORTANT: We highly recommend that you make a back-up of your data before upgrading your system or performing a complete installation.

you mean the betas and rc?

i know what you mean, i had 2 beta versions and the rc for ages now, they were both iso

but yeh i just couldnt understand why they did this, i mean im good at this stuff and it took me a couple of hours of trial and error and lots of searching to come up with a .iiso which should have been supplied in the first place

im just wondering how many non techie student out there have £30 files sitting on their desktop doing nothing.
