I think the biggest thing, as some have already mentioned, is to match the gift to the receiver - even the most materialistic appreciate knowing a lot of personal thought has gone into a gift. Some years I've made iced cookies for people in shapes that mean something to them - mini-Stigs for car people, gingerbread 'dog bones' for dog owners, one in the shape of a bow tie etc.

We do hampers too for most of DHs family. I look for interesting foodstuffs throughout the year-preferably on offer .We add a couple of bottles of wine-again bought on offer-and one or two "posh" items-this year they are getting mince pies and jam from the Chatsworth Farm shop.

If we come across cheap baskets we use them with paper shredded in our shredder-I save any small bits of red or green paper throughout the year. This year we couldn't find cheap baskets so are using hessian shopping bags from the Christmas market.
  • One of my favourite presents was from one of my sons when he was about 10. It was the last rolo, placed in a box and wrapped up.
  • It may be a bit late to start his for this year but...

A length of dressing gown type cord with 24 little sacks made from scraps of material from a charity shop sewn on. Then a little gift/sweet in each one like an advent calendar. Mine loved theirs when they were little and it can be refilled every year.

  • you could buy some packs of value shortbread it's really nice I'm surprised to say & only 9p a packet! Unwrap and lay it out on a tray, drizzle with icing or value chocolate (27p) and when set wrap them in home made bags to add to hampers.

Can you crochet at all? I'm making some cute little crochet penguins using a pattern from the Lionbrand website - I was just going to make them for my dad and bro-in-law who love penguins, but they have turned out so nice, I'm going to make some more for other people too.
  • Firstly, make use of as many special offers and "freebies" as you can. Thanks to a £9.99 penguin soft toy free with an iTunes voucher, the £10.50 nail varnish on the cover of the £2 Glamour magazine, Virgin Vie's £11 lipstick for just the £2.50 P&P, and ASDA's 3 for £10 wines, I currently have presents to the value of £50.97 for just £11.50!

Secondly, if things are really tight, set a limit. The Xmas after I was made redundant, the ex-wife-to-be and I set a limit of just £5 and also to try and get as many decent (ie. not just poundshop rubbish) presents as possible. It can be done. I decided to split it into something to drink, eat, read, wear and something smelly, therefore with an average of £1 each. Any savings on one category would allow me to go a bit over on another, if necessary. I got off to a flying start and realised that it could be possible, when M&S came up trumps for eat, drink and smelly with a little cube of Xmas cake, a taster bottle of wine and a travel size cosmetic, all for just under a £1 each. Something to read was a bit trickier, bit I eventually found a cheap paperback of daily horoscope predictions for her starsign for the coming year. I did cop out out on something to wear and got a £1 gift voucher from one of her favourite clothes shops. It really made us think about the true meaning of giving and Xmas.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • My kids love it when I make Gingerbread houses I have to make them one each so that they can decorate them my DD's best friend has a one year old and has asked me to make one for her for Christmas - I have got all the little sweeties and have bought a couple of cake boards then when it is made I will wrap it in cellophane with a big bow.
The thing is that now DD wants me to make one for each of her friends because she is skint!!!
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
