next.co.uk open credit account for daughter - are they right?

Most giftcards state that they cannot be used online, only in store -not sure if this is the same with next.
Can you explain what happened, pay with the gift card and, following others advice mke sure the account is closed with no record on your daughters file.
Yes, she shouldnt be pretending to be 18, but at 12 she probably wasn't aware about credit checks etc so might be worthwhile having a chat to explain th ese things and she will be aware for the future.0 -

It's not about the credit check that would worry me as parent. It was that the child thought nothing about lying and saying she was 18.
You cannot close Next accounts, they deactivate them or something but never close them.0 -
I want to know why Next are forcing people to open credit accounts, when all they want to do is spend the money they have been given on a gift card.0

The credit agreement is unenforcable as your daughter never signed an agreement with them which is necessary to provide credit. Also, being a child means she cannot be liable for this debt. Next should have done an identity check via a CRA before opening an account, many institutions do this to ensure the applicant is who they say they are (inc age). These checks are done to obtain mobile phones, insurance, credit cards etc.
Also, any defaults Next put on her file (inc CCJs) will fall off after 6 years, so basically when she would be legally able to apply for credit anyway.
Nice to see how many on here are quick to condem a child. If she had bought alcohol from a shop, would the 12 year old or the shop keeper who sold her the booze be in trouble?0 -

Fair response but we don't know if the daughter has obtained credit by putting details other than her own into the next website. We know that she lied about her age but we don't know any more. The OP hasn't been back to add any more details.0 -
All sounds very odd. As others have said, if she registered in order to use her gift card, and then used her gift card to pay, why would Next be asking for more money? Surely all that would have happened is that they would have set up a credit account for her (unused)?
It sounds to me as though there is a little more to this story than we have heard.
Hi ,
Theres nothing odd about it Im afraid .
I ordered some items at the start of this year , paid with my debit card ( or so I thought ). Items arrived , followed by a Spring/summer directory, which I didnt want or need, along with a statment and a £600 credit limit.
Apparently Next are well known fo this , there is a thread somewhere here about posters having exactly the same problem :mad:0 -

Thanks for the giggle. :money:0 -
Haha - when i checked my credit report recently, it has a section "these might be you but we're not sure and can't be seen by potential credit providers"
There is maybe 4 catalogue accounts that I have signed up for without realising when I was 12-15. Putting that you're 18 on a website isn't really a big thing so I didn't realise I was applying for credit.
Because the date of birth is different, it doesn't know whether it was me or not.
Sounds like a good life lesson to learn. I'm certainly very good with credit now0 -

Forcing? :rotfl:She wasn't held at gun point! She could have spent the gift card in a store.0
