I agree, I guess technically the Trader is asking you to commit fraud as the crack was there before your actual insurance cover, I would insist that the Trader pays for it.0

Cheeky begger!
Remember, if you do this you will have to declare this claim to any insurer you request a quote from for the next few years.
A claim is a claim and must be disclosed ... although admitedly it shouldn't affect any NCB (but you never know what the insurer might load as you have made a claim)
Personally I think if he's prepared to pay the excess, he's admitting it is something he is liable for, so I think I'd get a quote for a replacement windscreen and be demanding a cheque for that.0 -

Windscreen cracks / breakages wont impact either your NCB or have your insurance weighted against you.
If the O/P insists the dealer fixes it, then it will mean a round trip to the dealers, perhaps leaving the car there for a day, then having to either organise insurance for a loan car (often with an admin fee) or make a return trip to pick it up.
A windscreen replacement through the insurance will be done by someone like autoglass who will either come to your house or place of work. The excess will be £50 and they'll give you a receipt. That can then be refunded by the dealer.0 -
Apart from being totally illeagle, and you could both be in trouble. If as you say the crack was already there, you cannot obviously claim on your insurance.
Like the glass repair company are going to investigate the possible age of the crack THEN phone the insurance company to let them know it *might* have happened before the car was bought AND lose the business of replacing it?
Yes, i can see that happen. :rolleyes:0 -

None of that excuses the fact that the claim would be technically fraudulent.0 -

O/P will be happy and have the least hassle
Dealer will be happy
Glass replacement company will be happy getting the business
Insurance company will be out about £50 and be happy to have resolved a problem for their customer.
Not seeing the problem personally.0 -
You would be if it all went belly up.
The dealer knew it was cracked, he tried to hide the fact, let him pay.
Maybe its just an age thing with me then. Rather than 'principle' and ensuring the insurer isnt out any money and giving myself more hassle with the dealer, leaving the car in, possibly paying an insurance admin charge to change over the insurance for a loan car for the day, etc i'd be going for the practically automated procedure and hassle free option of just ringing the insurance company.0
