Our house is the same, but i've now not given up exactly more like able to be flexible with a meal plan.
For instance mine don't eat a lot of sugar, cakes and biscuits. So instantly my food bill goes up. My boys and OH could happily eat cheese, bread and meat till the cows come home. So i try and not complain about they eating habits.
Also my family now realise ie my OH (32), DS1 (10) and DS2 (6) if they eat all the cheese/meat then there's nothing left for the next day. Then they get a veggie meal. Nothing malicious about it, my lot understand i will not go out and buy meat unless its essential. I don't freeze cheese as quite frankly if they want something for later they WILL take it out of freezer. For instance last week i found my 6 year old munching on two bags of raspberries, turned out he had defrosted them himself about an hour before. So instead of despairing i'm now thinking well at least they can feed themselves without relying on me.

I do sympathise as it is a pain in the backside when the foods been eating you were going to use. But i freeze pretty everything as soon as its cold. Instead of sweet stuff make some savoury snacks instead, i know my OH and boys prefer savoury to sweet.
  • Some wonderful explanations for obesity here!

Yes I agree! My kids have a supper but its usually cereal AND my OH does to but seeds/nuts/ or veggies and some salsa -not full meals.

    its justifiable homicide hun!
but - its far easier to just hide it in the freezer and recycle it another time! you could also buy a large tupperware type box to keep in the fridge and label it 'munchies' or whatever

For a moment I was afraid Meritaten was suggesting what to do with the body after the homicide!!!:eek:

Taking my frugal life on the road!
  • My DH knows how tight money is and has always asked from day one what could he have from the fridge or freezer and the kids have been brought up the same way
The rule is ask before you take - and if I say I will be using such and such they will not touch but I always have some sort of snack available even if it is just crackers and cheese or HM cakes, biscuits or HM mini pasties, etc

I find my lot will steer clear of anything I label as off limits.......... buy some post-it notes:rotfl:
That would be my suggestion, too. If freezing the item isn't practical, would the offenders take note if there was a sticker on saying something like "earmarked for dins on Tuesday (or whenever) - Do Not Touch"?

I don't have this problem; Mr LW and I do the meal plan together, and if he gets the munchies, he goes and gets cream crackers and cheese.:A

I sympathise with all those that have the problem of fridge raiders!

My OH is pretty good and usually asks if I've got plans for meat etc, and won't touch it if its earmarked for dinner. I tend to do the menu planning, which is why he asks me. We both understand that money is tight and food needs to stretch.

I also do the 'put it in the freezer' straight away thing.

Another thing that works for us is having a shelf in the fridge for 'things that need using up'. OH knows that this is the place to look for snacks! We are lucky in that there's only 2 of us and we have a huge american style fridge freezer, so there is the space to have a shelf for this type of stuff.

OH doesn't have a sweet tooth, so prefers savoury snacks, but i find if there's lots of cheese (bought on offer, or donated by his parents as they don't get through it) he's happy! I also make pasties sometimes - they need very little meat, are filling and tasty.

    Hope that helps OP,

    Alison

Put it in the salad box? Never fails with my family. Or if you have or can make a small level at the bottom of the fridge (big enough to slide a few condiment bottles in), that's where my mum puts tupperware of cooked meat behind tomatoe puree and half onions, so my Dad doesn't notice it. He gets bread and cheddar to much on in the week, and pork pies at the weekend.
He's a sod for eating all the cake, he'll have chunks through out the day then offer the last slither to someone else.

Took the BF to Iceland yesterday to stock up on some frozen meat and pick up some snacks for him(cheap-o chocolate mousse and crisps). He keeps going over the road for snacks from costcutter when if he bought in advance he'd save so much money, £1.55 for a small pack of dark choc digestives... £2 for two big packs in lidl!
Don't know how I'm gonna tame one of our flat mates though, he's all take away pizza and bags of posh nuts  As long as he doesn't touch my slow cooker stew and pays his share of electric he can throw away his own money.

Snack shelf in the fridge? Or put snack food and DON'T EAT OR ELSE foods in different colour tupperware?
