I get round this by having a special shelf in the fridge for "eat it if you want" food, and everything else is off-limits unless you ask.
I have a shelf in the storecupboard for things that need using up, OH has been told if you are hungry please eat from this shelf!
So far he has not obliged.0 -

Well, I don't care if he doesn't eat the stuff on the appointed shelf, I only care that he doesn't eat the stuff on the other shelves iyswim? In the days that he used to eat ingredient food I would cook the rest of the meal anyway, then serve it. Any complaints and he got told exactly what was what, lol.Val.0 -
This thread has given myself and OH a lot of laughs.....thanksWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0

We have individually labelled tubs of things that children (and DHs) are allowed to eat wihtout asking - cheap/HM biscuits, sweets, nuts, crisps to a set budget for the week. It works quite well but my DH also eats the other three portions of whatever he had for dinner if it is left in the fridge. I suspect he sees it as a personal challenge, but I do take it as a compliment. He works FT, I don't and he rarely eats in the day so fairy nuff really.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0

I think the same goes for accidently forgetting they're not supposed to eat the sausages etc !Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Ok so my OH knows money is tight and is on board the moneysaving train. That is right up untill he's hungry add to that two pre-teen boy's with hollow legs and i just can't seem to keep them all fed without spending a fortune.
All three of them will open up the fridge without thought, eating anything and everything they see. My husband is the worse culprit as i can usually distract the kids with something cheap/sweet like homemade cake.
However my OH will quite happily open up the fridge to find the leftover chilli that WAS enough for an entire meal for the family.... bung the whole lot in the micro and sit eating it in front of the TV with a spoon with no thought of at least helping himself to a small bowl, with rice or bread because of course that would require effort.
This happened on Saturday, i got to sunday to find the Chilli that HAD been plenty for tea was half eaten, in his defence he did eat only half the meal intended for 4 despite having had lunch and dinner already!
Today i cooked a Massive gammon joint, did some with new pot's and veg for tonight.
Then planned to have some tommorrow in a Bacon and Bean Cassarole and have enough leftover for carbonara on Thursday.
Up i go for a bath ... downstairs i come and the &**^%$ is sitting in front of the TV with the plate on his lap having eaten a good kg of gammon, because he wanted something to nibble. He only had his tea 2 hours ago! there is loads of other food in the house, i made cookies earlier.. but no he had to go for the slab of meat!
i've tried asking him to ask before taking leftovers but he just doens't seem to get it.
Anyone else had to cope with this?? suggestions please before i end up locked up for murder.0 -
Tell you what works with my dad....................
anything that i want to use thats left over gets bunged in the freezer BEFORE I leave the kitchen. if it really is too hot, I put it into an old ice-cream tub and tuck it into my cupboard/larder until its cold and then i hide it in the freezer.
S'funny but he only wants to munch on stuff thats there and ready to dig a spoon in - he would never think of going in to the freezer, defrosting something and then sitting down to eat it.
mind you there is always plenty of bread, jam and sweet stuff to eat, so i'm not being very cruel.
