The only problem I had was a completely missing driver for an SD card slot.
I used http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/ to identify, download, and install one which is working just fine. The free version is limited to one driver download a day.
There are other similar products out there.0 -
Thanks very much kwikbreaks. It sounds like a great site, going to check it out.
Much appreciated.0 -
I'd rather run a Mac with Windows in virtualisation than use Linux and faff with WINE. (And although I do occasionally I'd still rather have a dedicated Windows box instead.)
I've used it before, but it's just not suitable for me, I use high end commercial apps and develop applications for commercial companies – I never come across one running Linux on a desktop system in an office, be it a one man band or multi-site corporate and I'm lucky to say I have them all as clients.
For my other career in design and photography I require quality imaging software, colour accurate workflows, and Linux couldn't hold a candle to a Mac for that, let alone none of it would run native on Linux in the first place. But all I (and most people) require is available on Windows and Mac OSes.
However for Internet servers and web services Unix/Linux is an excellent proposition, but for the end user, it's more of a hobby tool. In fact in the main when choosing hosting, I always opt for Linux / Unix (depending on what's offered), because it's stronger and flexible compared with Windows options, unless there is some need for specific Win components.
I'm not knocking it, but it's not for me, or not is it for many end users. Free isn't always the best value. You also need to have some in depth knowledge to troubleshoot issues, whereas OS X and to some degree Windows is much more friendly when problems arise.
When Adobe and other key companies start making their apps native for Linux, then I'll have another look.0 -
Well both my XP lappies (had them for 5 and 6 years respectively) have developed some faults and since I can't afford to be without a reliable computer due to my work, I have to go and get a new lappy asap. Window 7 it will be, although I'll try to keep one of the XP for as long as I can as back up.
I do hope that W7 is good, as I held out on Vista on account of so many unimpressive reports.
I'd definitely go along with that, keep XP as a backup and get a new machine with Win 7, we are going down that route to test.
(PS I just wanted to add to the amazement at your post count!) :rolleyes:0 -

I thought it would be a simple upgrade for me - ie shove disc in, press go a few times!! the laptop didnt come with any recovery discs so am really nervous doing it!
Same here, I am worried about loosing all the drivers on my laptop and rendering it unusable.0 -

WIn 7 just users Vista drivers if it hasn't got a win 7 one......and if its a new laptop it will work fineIf you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

You can be as doubtful as you like, and post as many links as you like, I'm talking about a personal observation, of XP and Linux on the same laptop using similar programs, for eg Firefox and the system is faster with XP.
Not to mention all the problems with peripherals, like plugging a plug and play mobile broadband dongle in and expecting it to just work.....
I suppose you also think wearing sandals and socks and having a bushy beard is fashionable?====0 -

Avast is W7 compatible, I've just run the W7 compatibility tool as I intend buying W7 tomorrow and it was on the list of approved programs.
