  • I know what it's like to work in London AlanM,having worked there in the late eighties.Parking was a nightmare. We had to have permits for everything.A five mile journey to work took up to 1 1/2 hrs and going to the merchants was a nightmare. On top of that we were restricted to working 9 til 5 because of the noise.I even got turned away from a deli because i had work clothes on and couldn't get any dinner.Bet it's even worse now.

It is difficult now, getting any form of trade into central London is enourmously expensive, but I'm just not interested in the hassle of it all. There comes a point where it doesn't matter what they're willing to you pay you, you just don't want to do it.
  • we had a company supply and install a solid wood loft ladder, this entailed extending the opening and adding strengtheners. It only took about 3-4 hours
so a full days labour seems a little too much. try https://www.clothiercarpentry.com

I have just had one fitted in my kitchen and my joiner cost £40 labour plus £90 for the ladder, and it is great. I live in the Scottish Highlands though.

We supply and fit a quality wooden loft ladder for £349 including VAT.

That includes and works that need doing to the joists, as long as it is not major (i.e. any further supports in the roof).

£150 for a days work is very reasonable for a qualified joiner.

You can always get a handyman to do things cheaper and if its cheap you want then go for it, however you get what you pay for.

I've finally stopped worrying about whether I have a trussed rafter roof. I found the following explanation at http://www.motherearthnews.com/Green_Home_Building/1987_January_February/A_Decision_Maker_s_Guide_To_Attic_Remodeling

"Start by figuring out whether the roof supports are conventional rafters or a trussed system. It won't take more than a glance. If there's a spider web of boards forming triangles between the roof and the floor, you've got trusses. The roof and floor of a trussed system depend on each other for strength. Never move any of the webs without consulting an engineer"

My roof looks pretty conventional (as I'd expect in a 200 year old house) there's definitely no spider webs and no triangles.

BIG Thanks to everyone for all the feedback, I'm going to go ahead and order the steps/hatch and get the Joiner in. If he finishes early I'll find some more jobs to make it up to a day!

Unless you are paying him 'for a day' rather than for a job, then I would OK this with him first!!!

Yes but joiners in the highlands charge less due to the increased supply of tea and home baking! (That's what hubby says anyway):rotfl:
it's not having what you want - it's wanting what you've got

    Hi

Seems a bit steep to me. We have a number of companies advertising locally to supply and fit the ladder, plus part board the loft for £299 including materials!

Seems a bit steep? You haveen't even seen the ladder!! :rotfl:
