Hi, we have big council tax arrears and have had 2 go to bailiffs. We worked out our SOA and then worked out what we could afford to pay the council/bailiffs. Then we wrote/emailled them and, if it was with bailiffs, copied in the council. We paid what we could afford by standing order (although originally we paid via the council site) as we did not want to pay the extra fees for paying over the phone.

You don't say what you can afford - don't borrow money to pay them, pay what you can afford. It doesn't matter what they want, they will have to accept what you can afford (it helps if they have a copy of your SOA.

We got 3 of our councils/bailiffs to agree to our offer. The final one refused to accept and 'insisted' that we paid them £700+ a month (ha ha) - we paid what we could afford by SO and haven't heard from them since.

Stick to your guns and don't let them in - ignore what the CAB said it is rubbish and no help if you can't afford to pay the amount in full.

    GOOD LUCK

  • Simple thing though, never EVER pay the money to the bailiffs. You can pay directly to the council and pay the bailiff fees seperately.

Bailiffs will charge you for payments etc..... also they will sometimes screw up where your payments have gone etc........
  • Thanks for all the usefull advice, My situation now is, I have made a token payment to the council via the online service ,, I will pay a regular amount each month to clear the arrears, Later today I am expecting a call from the bailiff to discuss the debt, I will inform them of my situation & offer to pay the £42.50 charge by cheque, Hopefully this will suffice and I will ignore any future contact from the bailiff, Does this sound alright or am I missing something ? Thanks again DD9

GOD THAT WAS A GREAT FEELING!!!!
