Rip-off tarrifs which should be illegal ie EDF

I have been looking at the small print on their tariffs and I am shocked.
Basically you sign up to buy energy at a rate which they can set, the only guarantee they give you is that it will at worst be similar to another rate (standard rate) which they can also set.
Worse still you have to stay on that tarrif untill a particular date, and worse than that they can extend that date indefinately!!

This is just not right, you should not have to sign your life away.

OPFGEM should not allow such contracts, but then we all are aware that OGFEM is run by corrupt criminals, as the energy companies are, some worse than others.

That OFGEM allows such contracts proves they are criminal.

You could argue that the gas companies don't know how much they will pay for the gas either, but that is false because as they keep telling us they bought all the gas in advance 2 years ago, so they know what their costs are. Infact it is strange how they managed to buy an infinite supply of gas at the time of maximum priice.

Exerts from contact:- ( EDF Online Tariff Version 5)

The Online Tariff Version 5 is a variable price tariff which may be subject to
price changes in line with your energy supply terms. However, until 31 July
2010, we will ensure that the Online Tariff Version 5 unit rates are at least 2%
less than our equivalent Standard tariff unit rate.

6. You agree to remain on the EDF Energy Online Tariff Version 5 for each account
until the Online Tariff Version 5 comes to an end, which, unless we write to you
to advise of any extension, shall be 31 July 2010
(the ‘End Date’).

    Why illegal?

You have the choice to go on the standard rate of any company.

All companies offer you an inducement(lower tariff) but at the expense of a penalty(exit fee)

It is up to all of us to decide if the inducement is sufficient.

I would agree with you that 2% below the standard rate is poor, although I believe with EDF it is currently higher than 2%.
Worse still you have to stay on that tarrif untill a particular date, and worse than that they can extend that date indefinately

Whilst I agree that clause 6 could be phrased better, I can't see that your interpretation is correct. IMO it means that after 31 July 2010 they can't insist you remain on the tariff. It means that they might extend that tariff end date but you will be free to leave without penalty.

Wel you are tryingto defend the indefensibe, that says a lot about your character, or rather lack thereof.

It's is illegal because it is extortionate, you are basicaly signing your life away to EDF, if you don't see a problem with that than wel lwhat can I say, you are as bad as they are.

You try to justify and mislead by trying to make it sound nicer than it really is but it is true evil and you support it.

As I say ithat says alot about your and your intend.

You can be locked in forever and they can raise the price as high as they like in that period, the can put their prices up by a factor of a million tomorrrow and you have to pay.

    Who would justify that?

    What kind of person?

No, because if that happened you could just switch to another supplier without penalty. On that basis it is one of the least worse tariffs out there. And for me it is currently the cheapest.

Their is no penalty for leaving the EDF Energy Online Tariff Version 5 before the 31/7/2010 anyway.

What's hard to understand? The online tariff you quote is not a fix price for a set period. Its a variable tariff, so the energy rate can go up as well as down. You are not trapped forever, you can leave whenever you want for nothing.

It's a T&C I've highlighted in the past. If you sign up for this tariff you really should keep a close eye on it. If they didn't at least envisage putting the tariff rate up at some point...err, why have the '2% reduction' guarantee in the T&Cs in the first place? On my usage in Yorkshire region this EDF tariff is currently approx 16% lower than their standard tariff and if EDf decided to simply honour the 'min 2% reduction on standard tariff' guarantee the annual cost would incraease by approx £150.

Having said that, as has previously been intimated there is no exit fee on this tariff though IMO the T&Cs in regard to this are very ambiguously worded (whether that's on purpose or not wouldn't be appropriate for me to speculate on).

IMO these sort of T&Cs should be completely outlawed - the reduction on standard rate should be guaranteed to be exactly what it starts out as, in this case 16%...

PS Clause 6 should also not be allowed.

Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

    I should have guessed.

He also posted in this forum as esbo and iamesbo.

He will get more extreme in the days to come I expect - last time he wanted lots of people lined up and shot.

    No you cannot.
Read the contract, you can't switch untill the end date and they can extend the 'end date' at their discression, read E-on opine 5 terms and conditions and show otherwise.
