as others have said, places like nationwide are useless when it comes to things other than exhausts, tyres and brakes (even then they struggle).
get a second opinion on why your emissions are so high? is the engine smokey? if not then i highly doubt your engine is knackered. it could be something as simple as a lambda sensor causing this, they only cost about £50....work permit granted!0 -
I agree on the second opinion and it should be fairly easy to find a VW specialist.
For the next MOT try a council test centre. They don't do repairs so you know that any failure is genuine and not a ploy for money.

Also, you can get your MOT done 6 weeks before it's due. If it passes, your next expiry is a year and 6 weeks later. If it fails, you have a whole 6 weeks to sort it before the old MOT runs out.0 -
thanks everyone for the helpful advice!
there is no engine smoking at all. it does misfire slightly when it's idling but nothing when it's running, drives like a dream. there's also no engine light coming on. effectively it's driving exactly like it was a year ago when it passed its mot!
is nationwide known for failing to get the repair deals? are they worth avoiding totally? we're taking it to a local guy well known. unfortunately there are no council mot centres around here, i did check though.
nationwide said something was wrong with the compression in the engine? does that make any sense to anyone?
the mot runs out on the 27th, nationwide were trying to tell me i couldn't drive it away from them because its now failed its mot as it would invalidate my insurance, but that's not right as the old mot goes until the 27th. pile of rubbish!0 -

if it was loosing compression you would notice a loss of power possibly.
they arent to be totally avoided, only use them when your getting prices for tyres and exhausts,if they will fit what you want at the best price them by all means use them, but dont be fooled by them telling you other things need doing. always get the other work done by a local independant.
ask your local guy if he would be kind enough to take it for its MOT to the place he uses, less chance of him being told a load of bull. obviously it would be nice to reward him for his kindness and for handing over a pass....work permit granted!0 -

mine too doesnt drive any different to when it passed mot last year.
what actually does it mean by high co2 emissions, does it affect the safety, efficency of the car etc?Wins so far this year: Mum to be bath set, follow me Domino Dog, Vital baby feeding set, Spiderman goody bag, free pack of Kiplings cakes, £15 love to shop voucher, HTC Desire, Olive oil cooking spray, Original Source Strawberry Shower Gel, Garnier skin care hamper, Marc Jacobs fragrance.0 -

yes it could i suppose. the fuel isnt being burnt properly. and theres a chance of oil being burnt aswell as the fuel if it has low compresion....work permit granted!0 -
what do you need to qualify under the scheme?
I think a valid MOT
Car has to be over 10 Years old
& car has to be owned for over a year.....
ANYTHING ELSE?Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!! Other people just fail to see my GENIUS !!!!0 -
