Confused. ?Car scrappage

I bought my 10 year old (june 99) car almost a year ago (October 28th) for £1450 and it's MOT is dated October 26th. I just got it MOT'd and it has failed supposedly needing a new engine (it's a small VW and only done 27 000 miles) and a new tyre which will cost upwards of £800.
I don't think I'm eligible for scrappage because I haven't owned it a year, and when I will have it's out of an MOT by 2 days!
I'm not sure what to do. I really love my little car but just realy don't know if it's worth paying to get it all fixed up and then drive it til it dies, or to trade it in or what. Any suggestions?

I think the garage is taking you for a ride."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
What are the usual causes for the emissions being too high? is there an easy way to bring the emissions down. If only to scrape the MOT and then get sent on its way for the scrappage scheme?0

why are you desperate to scrap a polo with 27k miles on it that you freely admit you love?
when was the car last serviced? it might just need a good service....work permit granted!0 -

Agreed, it is heart breaking that some people are actually sending cars like this to an early death.0 -
I do not want to send my lovely little car for scrappage! I had it fully serviced a year ago where they replaced one of the suspensions. It clocked in at 16000 last year.
This year it's actually only at 24000 miles. I took it to the garage this weekend. They said it's failed its mot because of one of the tyres and the emissions. Something is wrong with the engine and they said they can't just get a new part for the engine (which would be the obvious thing to do) that they would have to go and get a whole new engine for it.
My main aim is to keep my car, but I can't afford to pump this kind of money into the car each year.
I was just looking at what people think about my situation and any suggestions.0 -
Find a trusted independant garage that specialises in VW and find out what the engine needs then decide. Simples...0

I've taken your advice and am going to have a second opinion.
I had the quote from Nationwide car centres, and have subsequently googled them and found they often way overcharge people.0 -

Nationwide would probably not know what an engine is.
Good for you, get a reliable small private garage to give you a better idea of what your car requires, if anything at all.0
